Redneck-engineered sheath...my first attempt ever

OK, the craftsmanship and "fit and finish" aren't exactly what I'd call top notch. This was more an experiment than anything else. I wouldn't call it a resounding success but I do have a usable sheath for my Muddy MrS now.

Anyway I'm a big pocket-carry type of guy. Belts are for guns and choppers. Not EDC knives. IMNSHO. :p

What did I start out with?

1) A beat-up leather hat that's too small for my swelled head
2) A crappy leather belt that's separating around the holes
3) The remnants of a Buck/Strider 880SP that locks up like a broken screen door.
4) A Muddy AD that I thought I was making the sheath for
5) A slab of aluminum diamond plate

In the end I looked at some sheathmaking tutorials etc. online and said to myself, "Self, you could do that...and with this junk leather you wouldn't have to dye anything."

So with X-acto knife in hand I impaled my thumb (ouch!) and then cut out the leather parts. I made the clip-side double thick and sandwiched a piece of the diamond plate (milled flat) to it. I riveted the Buck's clip to the plate. I wet-formed the "pretty" side. I cemented everything together and then proceeded to show the world that I'd be a failure as a seamstress.

I originally sized everything for the AD but then realized I had only a few mm extra to get it MrS-sized. The MrS fits perfectly.

Whaddaya think? Perfectly serviceable considering the only thing I had to actually buy was the waxed thread for stitching and a few needles.

Oh, yeah, notice that short row of extra stitching? The knife was pretty loose in the sheath so I tightened it up with those extra stitches. My wife asked what they were for and I told her it was a "husband stitch". She rolled her eyes at me. :foot:

i like it. looks like it will work well!

you could probably smooth the edges with a little sandpaper.

Looks like a well made sheath!

And for next to nothing! Very resoursefull:thumbup:

Honestly you have no right to call that a redneck engineered sheath, I don't see one inch of bailing wire or the all important duct tape. Also with that being your first attempt I would venture to say that by the time you make your third you may just be able to start selling them.

That looks excelent and even better considering it's your first attempt.

Nice job!

That's a great way to come up with a sheath. It even looks like it would still work with the AD.

What type of knife is that you have. I should know the answer to that but I have been away for awhile.

Good job on the sheath, amigo. Is there a layer of leather between the diamond plate & the handle of the knife to cushion the micarta? Did you super-glue the knots to keep them from undoing themselves?

Oh, by the way, ........

Nice shirt. :D

Heck that's good leather work for a first go. The clip and all are located right, and it appears to ride well in your pocket.

Well done bro! :D "Husband Stitch" I like it! Might have to use that one from time to time! :)

Thanks all for the positive comments. Obviously I know where I could improve, but frankly I think I'm a bit too lazy to ever get past making sheaths for my own knives. I can definitely blame the crooked stitching on the Arid-zona weather though. I was using the drill press in the garage to run the holes, and I think it was just shy of 120 degrees in there. All I could think about was getting the hell out of there and back into the AC. Good alignment was NOT a priority! :o

Until I thought about using the waxed thread I was going to use some super-thin plastic-clad cable I had lying around to stitch it together. Does that count? :D

That's a Busse Muddy Meaner Street (MrS) in the sheath. The first pic is a Muddy Active Duty that I used for the original fitment. They both fit the sheath just fine now. The knives are shaped the same in key places.

Yeah, the aluminum is sandwiched between two pieces of leather. There's no metal exposed on the inside of the sheath at all. Super glue, eh? Knew I forgot something...one of the knots already undid itself. :grumpy:

Nice shirt. :D

Hey, it was casual Friday when I took the pic! :D
