i came up with the idea of a psk in a skoal can instead of altoids. i dip, got the tube from brother in law. seems to be good storage. and better than buying altoids...

well, any container that works for you is great.
make sure you got what you need in it...and you are good to go!

just make sure in the dark, after a few beers, you don't grab a dip....
and end up with vaseline soaked cotton balls in your maw. :)

an Altoid tin is larger cirner to corner than a Skoal (or whatever brand) can.

sure, a CRKT Ritter Mk5 PSK might fit in the Skoal can, but the blade is tiny. some of the makers here on BF make some PSKs that *just* fit in a tin corner to corner.

i expect that some things will just be easier to back in a rectangular tin than a round can.

A knife in your psk is a philosophical debate. There are those, like me, that think a knife is more important than a psk and will therefore already have a knife on them(or two). Meaning a teeny knife in your psk is dead weight and a person is better served with an extra fire starter or two. YMMV.

I have an Altoids Sours tin that is round.
I used it for a fishing kit.
A plastic fishing spool of line fits perfect and the area in the center holds hooks, sinkers, and swivels.

Frankly, if it looks silly and works, it's not silly.

If you're in a tough situation and the PSK helps get you through, nobody is going to say "bah - this guy is low-class... his PSK was in a dip can!"

On a positive note, so many people carry around dip cans in their back pocket that nobody would look twice if you had your PSK in one - the silhouette of an altoids can may draw some curious looks, though!

That Maxpedition pouch is fairly cool. It holds two tobaccer tins, not one. So you could have a good PSK with no firemaking stuff in it and the other tin could be dedicated for fire...or a dedicated fishing kit, etc. Pretty cool.

I dunno, my survival philosophy doesn't really count something like that as "dead weight." Well, unless it's made out of lead or something. :D

Nice, but no redneck PSK is complete without freeze dried Moon Pies and dehydrated RC Cola packets.

:)

My Altoids fishing kit.

The black spool of line is a freeby, it was included when I bought a full sized spool. The tin in the center is from bepreparedtosurvive.com

The goods

I've found that Copenhagen/Skoal cans make for a great fishing line storage containers. You can fit A LOT of braid wound up inside and of different lb tests without it getting tangled. I've made a few small fishing kits using a Skoal can. Like Tony also said they make great containers for storing fire starting materials. Blade-Tech also makes a pretty stout can holder.
