I bought a Gerber Command 1 for $2 sans sheath and kind of re ground edge considering doing a better refinish and maybe another handle.what does the tang on these look like just a bar? Flat and wide? I know it can’t be to wide maybe 1/2” tops? Is the binder just epoxy or rivets too? I see two dents through the handle finish that look like rivet dents,I don’t have a lot of daggers but I could remake a nice one here.

From this same forum:

The Mark I and Mark II have rat tail tangs vs full tangs. When assembled, both the tang and the hole in the cast aluminum handle were coated with epoxy and then the tang was inserted into the handle. Fixtures were used to keep the blade and handle in alignment (or not, re: canted blade) while the epoxy hardened.

fully undwrstand that the question is about the command i.

perhaps you might wanna take reference of this.

So I would/ should, to make a conventional tang weld an extension to the tang then build my handle off that.if your telling me the Command 1 tang is the same design, normally I would consider that a weak way to tang a knife ,but I am more blacksmith, actually a farrier who nowadays uses ironwork when the need arises, and woodwork when necessary and other crafts to make guns, knives, tomahawks, leather and horn acouterments as needed for me and friends . I can make stuff ,but not for a price or as a job, that takes the enjoyment out. I do love barter!

Yep, they all have roughly that same sort of tang. All of the Gerber knives in that metal handled family have short tangs that only go 1/3 - 1/2 inside the metal body. People are usually shocked to see it.
