I've been consdering the idea of taking my commander and regrinding it so it has a convential v grind edge. What is your take on this?

If I was to do it, how would I approach it withough F ing the knife up? I have limited experince when it comes to sharpening knives and putting on a different edge.

Thanks.

...pull the edge up and change the blade profile? I am not 100% sure whether the commander has a flat/chisel grind, or a V grind with a chisel edge. If the former, then regrinding the edge to make it symmetrical is going to pull the cutting edge up towards the back of the blade. If it were me, and this was the case, I would try to get a different knife instead of ruining a good one...

Clinton, it's a "V" grind with a chisel edge.

bmcneil, you might want to contact David Brunner of Bandit Knives. I know he has done this modification for a couple of people.

...I forgot to add, if it is the latter, and it is already V ground with a chisel edge, then putting a symmetrical edge on it would not be that hard. Just some sweat and a good diamond stone. For a commander, I think you would need a diamond rod to get into the curves. You would not just want to mimic the honed edge on the upper side of the chisel edge as this would then lead to an overly blunt edge. I would try to figure out what the original grind angle was, then figure out how to redo it with a symmetrical edge.

I just spent 2 hours doing this with my dagger point Gerber covert and an ezelap diamond stone. I chose the particular knife because of its rock solid lockup compared to other samples. Unfortunately, the grind is a bit off centre. Even with the EZ lap diamond stone, it takes awhile to chew through the ATS-34. I am looking forward to getting it tuned up so I can give it to a friend for Christmas. Soon as my 7b comes through... ;-)

i traded for a commander thar has been redone by bandit knives, i actually didnt know that the commander had the weird grind until i traded for this one - i looked at a buds commander w/a std grind to compare - imho this is a good modification, mine looks factory, not like some yahoo did it, and is sharper, and easier to sharpen than the std commander grind - i dont guess it enhances collector value, but i dont have a lot of $$ in mine, traded a BM 42blk i had about $90 in, so who cares?? i carry the knife daily too, so it is not LNIB anyway, but i think the reprofile as done by bandit is usefull, and has no negatives imho anyway.........and certainly does not 'ruin' the knife, that is a fact
