Reducing amt of smoke when heat treating

When heat-treating 1095/O1, I oil-quench and of course there's occasional
flare-up and some smoke. Reason being differential quench, where
only the cutting edge is submerged in oil. After I can not see any red heat
in the rest of the blade, the whole thing is submerged in oil, just to cool it.

As the blade cools enough, I wipe it off and stick
it into a preheated electrical oven @ 400F. And that's when there
is a whole lotta smoke coming out of the oven, especially when I
do a few blades at a time. I guess whatever oil is left on the blade
after the quench is causing it.

What's the best way to fix that ? I am afraid of rinsing the blade
in a solvent - as there's quite a bit of stress in it and I want to
temper right away ... May be get some dishwashing liquid mixed up
in a boiling hot water ?

I use a scotchbrite pad and rub the blade with the hot quench oil right after the blade comes out of quench. Cleans them up real nice, then just wipe the excess oil off with a rag and throw it in the oven

I always wash the blades in soap and water before tempering. Never had one crack yet from it. Momma would pop a gasket if I put them in her oven still oily.

I also use plenty of soap and water and sometimes scotchbrite off the crud before doing that.

I just wipe the blade down with paper towels and plop it in the oven. If it smokes and stinks up the house, tough crap.

I figure a man should be able to do whatever the hell he wants. And if a woman mouth's off , he just needs to smack her around a bit.

:D

I'm just kidding.

I wash and scrub the blade first.

Big talk Mark, I like that. It's so nice of you to let your wife use your tempering oven for cooking in the first place!!!:D

She's damned lucky I let her share the Master's air. So are the rest of people taking up space on my planet.

I wash mine (blades that is...). I cant stand the haze of smoke in the shop otherwise. Most of the time I just spray it with simple green and its gtg.

Frank's wife coming out of the closet? I better leave that one alone....

Just to clarify - I do it in the garage, so it doesn't stink up the house.
When enough smoke accumulates in there I pop the door open for a few
mins and it clears it up, but I do loose fair bit of heat that way :(

I guess next time I will try washing it in a hot water/soap solution
before tempering.

BTW, I also use anti-scaling compound - the PCB from Brownell's.

I wouldn't worry about cracking the blade. After I quench I let the blade cool to room temp then put the blade in the freezer for a cryo treat. Done this to 4 or 6 so far and no evidence of cracking. I started the cryo as a carbon steel with 100 points carbon can have in the neighborhood of 15-20% retained austenite at room temp. The cold transforms more to martinsite. Don't know exactly how much.
