Hey guys... I am curious if any of you use Redwood for knife making. And if it's any good. I've got a few blocks of it that I could stabilize and make scales out of.

And if any of you would want some for a super small fee I could cut it and ship it to you if you wanted me to. Not really a for sale thing... more like a you pay shippin and it's yours... Just tell me the sizes you would need... ROUGH sizes... and it'd all be non-stablilized from me.

Just an idea....

Redwood burl can make some awesome scales. It does need to be stabilized tho. It's not a hard wood.

I've got some slabs of burl I'm holding onto for now.

If it is just plain old redwood, use it for a knife display stand. If it is redwood burl, have it stabilized.

I get most of my burl from Burl Country in Fortuna, CA. They have a large selection of burls. Most of it is cut in slabs that are 2" thick. I usually get pieces in the 2' to 3' round range. I then cut it into the sizes that I use and send it off to be stabilized. I've gotten lace burl, redwood burl, buckeye burl and birdseye maple from them. They're a pleasure to deal with. You can get a lot of burl material at very reasonable prices. It also allows you to work with your stabilizer to add color or to "not" add color, depending on what you're after. It is a great source for native american burl species.
