It finally happened, in making a king sized machete, I grooved the work table on my Burr King. I was flat grinding a piece of 5160 with a Norton 50 Hogger. The piece of steel was 40 inches long, 5/16 thick, and 4 inches wide. About 8 pounds at start! I guess the build up of grit, combined with the weight of the steel and the back and forth motion across the rest put a serious groove in the rest. The finished, massive machete came out great, but now I must fix the damage. Can I weld a bead into the groove and resurface it against the platen, or does anyone have another way to fix this?

There are several options . You can make a peice of hardend steel and screw if from the back to the platen. Then if it happens again just replace it. The Vallottons of in Oregon use corell wear and glue it on. Then just heat and replace it.. They have them for sale the last I checked.. I havent tried to weld it up and resurface...

I like the corell wear after your done you can eat supper on it :}
