 Dadgummit, me and refillable butane lighters just don't get along!
I have never been able to get fuel in one of em! I have a brand new one that I got with some cigars I bought from Thompsom Tobacco and I bought a new container of butane. Tried fueling the lighter up and the darn thing won't do anymore than glow.
I go by the instructions on the can so I guess I'm doin it right. Lighter and can upside down and push hard so the fuel doesn't escape.
Anyone else have problems with these things?
Should I just pitch it and go back to the old lighter fluid zippo?
Thanks guys!

Maybe the lighter takes a special brand of fuel. They could have incompatible couplings.

L6 I'm with you. I have never once beem able to fill one of those damn things. I have a draw full of them. Some really nice ones too. Got em as gifts and I'm embarrassed when I'm around the friends that gave them to me.

Somebody please help us.

Not all cans are universal in their coupling spouts.

That will cause no fuel gettin in.

Does the can have several nozzles to chose from?

Just a suggestion, I have a butane Zippo and was having problems filling it as well and realized I was pressing down to hard. Backed off a hair and it filled fine. Try the less is more approach, it may work for you.

I'll give that a try IC!!!
The can of butane I bought just has one spout, it's Ronson brand. I didn't know the things came in different sizes. If that aint another dumb ass thing to come up with! The lighter is some no name pos, probably made in China so who knows what brand fuel will fit it.
Hmmmm, I just noticed the tip on the butane can has ridges on it very 1/4" or so, like you can cut it to size. HHa, that did it!!
Tball, break out the lighters, the fuel, and a sharp knife! :D

I also have a (very nice) butane lighter that I can't get to fill either, so I gave up and went back to the $.69 Bic lighters...Those ones work everytime, and don't need to be re-filled with anything.

I talked to a guy in the Tinder shop yesterday about this exact thing. It seems that the most common problem is that there is air pressure inside before you fill it. If you press douwn on the valve (like letting the air out of a car tire), then fill with fuel. That did the trick for me!

butane lighters are tools of the devil. throw them out at night so no one will see you had one. after doing that go get your zippo and fill it up with fluid, wipe it off and there you go. I know it's a pain in the butt to keep it topped off but look at it like cv steel in a case knife, more trouble but worth it. just set a day of the week and top it off and you'll never have a problem. later, ahgar

Yep! My Z-Plus Zippo insert worked perfectly, until it ran out of fuel. I tried to fill it and couldn't get it to work. I took it back where I got it, and was telling the guy as I walked to the counter. Before I got there, he was reaching for his tools. He took a small screwdriver and bled the inisert, then filled it.

Worked like a charm after that. He told me that they get inert gas with the fuel, and you have to discharge them before refilling.

Butane is the only option for lighters if you smoke cigars. I have a nice Dunhill one, but I have to admit nothing beats a bic for reliability.

I also found taht putting the lighter in the freezer for an hour before refilling, and running warm/hot water over the butane bottle gets more butane in as the butane bottle gets lower in gas. (it's a Pv=nrT thing...)

One tip is to fully empty the lighter first. Use the tip of your knife to press the brass inlet valve until all the gas and compressed air is gone. Then fill the lighter.
