Refinish stacked leather handles

I picked up a nice little hatchet with a stacked leather handle the other day at a swap meet. The handle is solid but the clear finish seems to be peeling off. This will be a user but I still would like to refinish the handle. What will give me a nice durable finish?

I've got a couple of leather washer handled knives,I just use Kiwi neutral shoe wax on them,works great.To get the peeling finish off,tear some fine grit,cloth backed sandpaper into 1/2-1"strips,sand it off using a shoe shine motion.Hope this helps.
