Well here are my first attempts at refinishing a vintage axe. Still need to hang it to the handle. I think I found a new addiction. Next will be my plumb double bit. :) ps this is the original handle it needed some repair and I was able to do so with some wood glue and saw dust just filled in the cracks and missing chips then sanded after drying then painted.

A nice looking piece. I like the pattern with that nice rounded poll that has not been beaten to death.
Like your floor too. Is it oak?

Thanks! Yeah the axe head was in great shape when I purchased it and the handle wasn't too bad either considering its age. I don't think it saw much use. I'm not sure if the wood floor is oak or not to be honest. It's the original flooring in the house and the house was built in 1903 if my memory serves me right.

I am a lover of wood as well as the tools we use to work it. Of course the native timber of NZ is what I know best.
But oak is also one of my favourites. By the look of your floor oak grows quite quickly in your part of the world as it does here. The oak in England grows more slowly so has a much tighter grain pattern. The English variety makes beautiful furniture.

Thanks for the info. That's really cool. And yeah there are plenty of oak trees around. I'm fortunate enough to live in the country and not in the city. There are woods and fields everywhere and it is a big part if my life. New Zealand would be amazing, I've seen pictures and film but I'm sure in person is a whole new level, thanks again for the comments everyone. I hope to have my plumb finished soon also. It's already blasted n sharpened I just need to find a good handle and hang it. Hopefully tomorrows finds at the flea market will be good. Ill post what I find tomorrow.

Hey Mike forgive me if I missed it in another thread but did you do anything after sandblasting. I have been tinkering with different methods for cleaning rusted heads and sandblasting is next, figured i'd blast and then just hit it with 200 grit.

No not really other than a final sharpen and a little sanding. It still has a pretty rough profile on most of the axe. But I'm thinking about polishing it a bit more though to be honest.
