Refinishing a rifle

My brother inherited my grandfathers old rifle when he passed away last year. It's a Remington 721, 30-06 with a wood stock. It was well used to say the least. My grandfather had carved some animals into the sides of the buttstock, and it was used to take many animals. Something of a family heirloom now I guess.

Well my bro was going to pay to have it refinished, but remembered that I have been making knives lately, and asked me to refinish it for him. I dove right in, only happy to preserve a piece of our family history.

It seems all of the skills I am acquiring while making knives is translating into firearm refinishing. Patience being one of the more important things I have learned. I wish I had taken some before pictures, but I just dove right in. I'll share some pics of the in progress work after I get home this evening if anyone's interested.

Stock only, or bluing as well? Both skills translate well from knifemaking. I haven't done a stock in a long time, but did three or four back in the day.

Jason I'm doing the stock and the bluing. The stock is almost done. I'm just waiting for the danish oil to cure before I buff it with steel wool. I have stripped all the old bluing off the barrel and am getting ready to reblue it. I also painted some of the hardware in a flat black.

Here are a few pics.

Here is the stock. I have already removed the old finish, sanded it down, and treated it with Danish oil. I had to remove a couple of big gouges, and was careful not to remove too much of the carvings:

Here is the barrel and trigger guard at 220 grit. I will finish it up to 600 then blue it in the next day or so.

And here are a couple of pieces of hardware that I spray painted matte black:

It should look like new when it's all done.
