What do you guys think? I'm going to place my order for a service grade Garand at the CMP at the end of this month, and it's pretty likely that the stock will have a few dings and scratches. Should I leave the old warhorse as is, or should I refinish it?

Any tips for refinishing an old wood stock?

I wouldn't refinish it. Clean it up and love it dings and all.

You could buy a replacement stock to do up nice, glass bed, etc, and still have the "original" stock also.

best of both worlds.

Take care,

Tom

Depends on what your into, I guess. My '44 Springfield's stock was cleaned up by the previous owner. Boyd's still makes replacement wood, I believe.
If it's a knock around the woods shooter, let her be. If it's going to hang over the mantle, clean up the original. If you are going to shoot it in matches, re-stock and glass bed etc..

I prefer mine dinged up, the character remains and you don't have to worry about a fine finish, I saw a friend lean his K31 up on the bumper of a truck, it fell and lost a chunk of wood on the hand guard, sad, as he had spent hours to steam out all dings make it a deep glossy finish. He rarely shoots that rifle anymore.

Give it a good cleaning, then hand rub in a thin coat of BLO. Wipe down after 15 min. Another coat, wipedown after an hour. Repeat thru the evening. Then oil rub & wipe once a day till the finish looks good. Takes time but is authentic. I've done all my military rifles this way. Used to use "rancid reindeer fat" but now use BLO topped by a yearly touchup of Ren wax.
