Refugee Camp for EDC Folders... Time to Build a Byrdhouse?

I now have about a dozen different folders loitering on my dresser like a gaggle of shiftless hobos, and more are showing up every few weeks. Rather than have the master bedroom look like an army surplus exploded or a Tactical Wheelbarrow capsized, I think it’s time to get organised…

I find it convenient to have my folders on or near the dresser where I also keep my watches, wallet, keys—the usual EDC items. Since most of my knives are suitable for EDC utility, I’ll change up the rotation depending on how I’m dressed and where I’m going that day. Seeing the knives side-by-side is very helpful when making a selection, so packing them away in their original boxes and tossing them in a drawer somewhere is not an ideal solution for me. So what is the solution?

I’ve had a few ideas: plastic organiser/drawer (practical, inexpensive, not too classy looking,) tackle box (portable, stowable, affordable--an old wooden one would be very nice but perhaps pricey,) cigar box (limited capacity, but a few stacked might do the trick,) and of course the custom cabinet/drawer system (might just be able to make one myself.)

I am likely overlooking some options here. Please chime in with your suggestions… :)

If you want something classy, Gerstner tool box base. Nice looking and lockable.

Nice, until you look at the price.

or you go the cheap way....

$47 from Craigslist :D

I've got a pelican case about 6" deep, with the "pick and pluck" foam, holding about 15 Spyderco and Kershaw. I decided when that fills up, it's time to trade or sell knives. I mean who really needs more than 18....

Another option which a friend of mine has done....musician's microphone road case. It's made to hold 8 mics, heavy foam lined and would likely hold 30-50 folders.

There's a company called Grizzly, makes a comparable chest to Gerstner for about 25% of the price. I haven't seen one, but have read some favourable reviews.

For me, it's the bottom desk drawer. It's littered with various tools, knives, gun parts, etc. Every few years, I empty it and marvel at all the crap I've forgotten I bought.

I've got an old wood and brass cigar box. It'll hold about 10-15 folders and looks classy. The fixed blades go in a shoebox under the bed, since I rarely carry or use them.

My thanks to all for the suggestions!

spyderco and benchmade i believe have large rollable bags that are clear plastic on the front so you can see them and they store up to like 40+ knives (...)

If you're a serial killer on the go, or maybe just taking the collection to a convention, this is a good travel option. :p I don't really have a need either way. :D

I visited the Gerstner website and found that their prices were on par with conventional steel toolbox manufacturers. Surprised? Me too. As far as collection storage goes, if I was to pay $500-$1K for a tool chest, I'd much rather have a Gerstner than a Mastercraft... However, like yourself, I have been able to find similar products that are more affordable. Thanks for the shove in that direction!

If I was to undertake a lunar expedition, I would want my gear packed in a Pelican case. Very tough looking! After a nuclear holocaust, there might only be cockroaches and Pelican cases left. And maybe radioactive zombies. Seriously though, I see this as more of a travel option.

An excellent suggestion! Shipping could be a potential issue, but as mentioned above, there are other companies that are closer to home and have similar products/price-points. :)

Agreed. Although I'm leaning more towards the wooden tool chest idea, a couple of nice cigar boxes would work, and I haven't ruled them out.
