I stumbled upon an older knife with what appear to be black G-10 scales, and the scales are looking "chalky" and gray, especially around the edges.

I read somewhere that he cure is to wash them with soapy water, then apply WD-40, then soapy water again …

Before I make matters worse - can anyone help me get these back in shape?

Thanks.

Note: Don't sand them, that will kill the texture

First you'll want to degrease it(Rubbing alcohol, brake cleaner) and have it clean as a spoon you'll eat with, after that you'll want to dry it

Apply Silicone oil or WD-40 equivalent onto the scales. Now they will shine line new. Remember to wipe off excess so the knife won't slip out of your hands when using
