I have a 110 that I've really beaten the heck out of over the years. However the edge has always held up admirably and structurally the kinfe is still completely solid. What I'd like to do is take it apart, clean everything up and put it back together. Hopefully with the original scales. I don't want to make it look new; I say the scratches and chipped tip add character, heh. But the brass is filthy and more importantly, it feels like there's a bucket of gravel inside it when you open it. (years of back-pocket carry). NorthWoods "BreakAway" spray helped a lot, but I feel I owe it to the knife to return it to peak performance.
Is this a feasible project or should I just go spend $50 on a new one?

GibsonFan,
At the very least you may want to consider sending it back in to Buck to have sharpened and to clean it. If you do, make sure you let them know you want the original blade to stay, otherwise they will want to replace it with a new one. If you want to try to take it apart on your own, there are others here that have done it. I think it's just a matter of having a decent set-up and replacement brass pins. I'm sure others will post with the specifics.
Mike

hi gibsonfan
i would suggest getting a new one first (might as well make it a nice one s30v/bg42) then take yours apart for cleaning/servicing
i would like to take one apart to see how they tick but so far all i have is new/mint ones oh well it could be worse good luck and if you do take apart make sure to post pics on your project

Welcome to the forum Gibson. This past year I retired my original 70's user and picked up a couple of the Cabellas Alaskan 110's in S30V.

Might be something you want to look at.... Or, a new 110 is under $30 at Wally. most places....

I sure wouldn't take that one apart if you haven't ever done that before.. Practice on something else. Like Mike said, Buck will clean it up for you for a small fee. I believe it includes sharpening and buffing.

You didn't describe the year marks on the tang so if it is special to you as it is, like Mike said. Tell Buck you do not want the blade changed.

the Blade is marked BUCK 110> U.S.A. ... I it new in '87 and the Buck website says the > means 1987. I got it for my birthday, senior year in H.S... 20th anniversary coming up... y'know how it is :) ... by the way the original sheath looks like hell too, lol, but still perfectly serviceable.

Sounds to me like it is special to you... Your just a youngin, make that one the start of your Buck knife collection.

 ...I agree with the Pack Rat fella there Gibson. You have a nice knife that I'm sure carries a few memories of times that you will enjoy to recall. Keep it like it is and begin yer "Mad Accumulation" that's destined to begin soon if ya stick around here at all...LOL...

heh ...based on advice from here I went to the Buck website; guess who's got a hankerin' for a new knife? btw what's so great about ats-34 or bg-42? Buck offers either on the Custom 110 but only in a satin finish. Is either worth the extra $15-19, and why?
I'll call Buck this week... I can clean up the brass and blade myself just fine, it's the internal corrosion that bugs me. Hmm, I seem to remember Grandma soaking steel/iron in coca-cola to dissolve rust };> I'll try to get some pics of it up.

oh no you guys ar going to infect another with buck feaver!!!
welcom to the forum ... yep that is a young'en i got my first in 67... had all them cepten some that sproted leggs , buck gota do some thing on them legs growing on them knives... but yep send it in to frishen it up and then retire it and yep the s30v is worth it ...
and donelet these guys sshow yua pirty picts of collections or you will be wanting all then tooo..

thanks for the warm welcome, guys. And yeah... there's at least 3 knives on my wishlist at the moment lol....... I'll have to look into s30v more. I know Buck's 420HC gets kind of a bum rap for being brittle, but I don't use it to clear brush fer cripes sakes.

The S30V and BG42 will hold an edge longer than the 420 steels, unfortunately, those steels don't come in off the shelf users. Maybe someday. Well, other than the S30V Alaskan Guide from Cabellas.

Here's some that you might get from the custom shop, except for the drop point, you would have had to been a Buck Collector Club member to get that one. I detect that the addiction has started...

you can click on this a couple of times to make it really large.

DANG... nice knives there, PackRat! I found the Squire Sambar stag model with nickel bolsters on budk.com last night for $85... gonna check around for prices but I'm 90% sure that's gonna be my next EDC... course I still need to get my old one fixed up... and I do have my eye on a 110 custom......... looks like a lotta mac'n'cheese dinners in my future so I can pay for 'em all!!

Thanks,,,

And I realized I never did say anything about cleaning...

On a really dirty 110, I will use a brush, gojo handcleaner, and get it down in as much as I can. Work the blade with the go jo in it. Brush the heck out of it.

Wash it out in as hot a water as you can stand while working the blade.

Then I take the WD40 to it and saturate it, again working the blade to get the grit out. Have used the air compressor to blow out the wd40 and re apply if needed till it smoothes up.

But I am getting lazy in my old age... I have one here somewhere that came in kind of like what you are talking about. When I run across it again, I'm just gonna stick it in the dishwasher... (when the wife isnt looking) :D

hmmmm GoJo... there's a big ol' jug of FastOrange at work, that oughtta do. I used Break-Away instead of WD-40 and should use it again I think. Check 'em out, www.northwoodstm.com. Just remember if you try the BreakAway, it has percloroethylene (dry cleaning fluid) in it so be very careful about fumes. But it works damn good on scale and light corrosion, and wipes off clean.
I don't have a dishwasher but maybe if I buy one for the lil woman she won't get too mad about me messin' around with guitars and knives alla time.... ;)

gotcha... I've got a coat of TurtleWax chrome polish on it now, I'll see how that looks when I rub it out.

well I put a lil elbow grease into it... and a little chrome polish... and a little polishing compound on a Dremel felt tip... and it's startin to look like a knife again. Did I void the warranty? lol.
