Called Busse this week about refurbishing a old Mean Street I recieved in a trade with some other items. Talked to Amy who said that they " would make it pretty again" but I would have to e-mail Garth about the specifics. Got me all excited then boom....Garth sends me a e-mail about not having the handle patterns any more and so sorry nothing he can do. This happen to anyone else? Also, anybody do or know of someone who will do this kind of work for a resonable price?
New to the forum so thanks for any info.

Does your "Old Mean Street" have smooth or slotted rivets in the handle and a smooth black paint on the blade? If so, Busse doesn't use those fasteners or the smooth finish paint any longer, so they can't re-finish it to the original state. Without pictures, I don't know the condition, but would guess it is worth more with the original fasteners and paint, so I would just continue to use it the way it is, but that is just my opinion. :D

Those old MS are sweet!
Plenty of custom knife makers can re-handle in another material...

Didn't we see old school MS at Knob?
I wonder why those handles would not work?

Yes on the smooth rivets and smooth paint...whats left of it. Someone has tried to strip it off and accomplished most of the job. I could probably rehandle it myself. All I would need to do is pick up some hidden bolts. Already have the Micarta. Guess my big thing was one person saying it was no problem, then getting blown off. Im awaiting shipment of a meaner street from a person here on the forums, and just thought it would be nice to have a old and new MS that matched. Wonder about glass bead blasting. Any input?

Also, i'm a collector but more important to me is that I use my knives. I have a few safe queens, but I like to get them out and play when I can, so the value as it was original is not that important. Rather have my old MS looking good than worry about the value. Like to thank all for helping out a newbie.

You could glass bead blast it, but A2 steel will rust pretty easily if given the chance, that is partly why they were coated. I have done many hidden bolt knives (the hollow rivets are actually a lot easier) and it is not too hard, but you need the right size counterbore drills are need to control the depth.

Thats what I thought about the bead blast also. You would think that they could have offered to recoat in my choice of crinkle color and said re-slabbing was not an option. Like someone else said, just about any maker can re-handlle in another material.

Is there something wrong with the current scales???

If not, leave em. If you want to use the knife, duracoat it or something. I'd be fearful of mucking up an old school blade.

Does it look like the bottom knife in this pic?

As gus indicated, a lot of guys here would love your beat up knife as-is.

Yes there were... and that was my first thought. May of been some old scales they had???

I assume he though you wanted it the same with the smooth coating???

I would try them again and ask if it could be done with a newer coating.
Also ask about the slabs they had at Knob, if those would suit you. If not they should be able to make scales, but that would be a long wait and cost a good bit more.

BTW- what's wrong with your slabs that would make you want them changed?
If not broke I would leave them be. Also they are a few here that could put you some slabs on pretty quick.

Yes I talked to you and I said..."We would make it pretty" Mean Streets is one of my favorite designs...HOWEVER you told me that you just wanted it cleaned up..meaning ...(to me) to be recoated... and the edge cleaned up...but we also talked about the crinkle coat finish that we do now and that we no longer do the smooth finish that you had....You never mentioned changing the handles to me and I also told you that you would have to e-mail Garth about this issue..cause he has the say so on this...
he and crew work hard to do a OUTSTANDING job.

Maybe I am reading this wrong and if I am ..I apologize...:)

any other questions please call me in the morning (I will be there till 5pm) at Busse Combat Office at 419-923-6471 or you can e-mail me your number at amy@bussecombat.com:) and I will call you:)

Amy - you are awesome  You are the model of customer service

I will take that ugly off your hands. I have a cleanish convexed GW, and a really ugly SS modded, and heck I would even let you take my Ash1 with the convex edge. I would show that dirty old ugly good for nothing old school meaner some TLC, and whisper sweet nothings to it a darkened room with a candle light dinner..................(Too creepy? sometimes I go too far)

Lets see some pics for the love of all that is hogly (or holy if you wish).

Just to let everyone know, I was not very clear in explaining to the fine folks at Busse what I was wanting done which in turn explained their response. I have since tried to clarify (and apologize) and hopefully can get the MS restored to a like new condition. This shows me that they are willing to go above and beyond the cause which is a lost art in some companies. Thanks to everyone who commented.
