Refurbishing a Benchmade?

My brother was taking a lunch break during an excercise (he's in the army) the other day and found a benchmade auto. They were in the woods and on base when he found it. Anyway, he said the knife is in pretty decent condition with the exception of the very tip of the blade being broken and from his description, it sounds like it could use some oiling and tuning. He isn't very knowledgable about knives, nor am I for that matter and I am coming to you guys for advice on his options to have the knife fixed up. It is a great find for him, considering he needs a good knife and doesn't have the funds for the quality of knife that he found. Thanks for any suggestions.

Send it to Benchmade, they'll take care of the rest. Check their website for proper procedures. Since he's in the military there shouldn't be any problems with sending/getting back an auto.

Id give BM a call and see what their suggestions are. They are great guys with great CS

Everytime I sent something to Benchmade they required a receipt.

Here's what it says on warranty. Maybe you can still get repairs but you have to pay for it if you won't have the receipt

Each new knife is packaged with written documentation of the Benchmade Warranty. Benchmade Knife Company, Inc. warrants to the original owner that the knife will be free from defects in materials and workmanship. Benchmade will without charge, repair or replace at our (Benchmade's) option, any knife returned for Warranty work and found to be defective by Benchmade. The knife must be shipped by owner, prepaid and insured, together with a description of the problem and must be accompanied by the original bill of sale, your charge or credit receipt or any satisfactory proof of the original date of purchase.

Granted, I never had tp send anything to BM for repairs, I've read many stories on BM forum from guys who sent their knives in without any receipts. Including a story posted by one of the BM employees about a guy bringing in a knife found in the woods. Last story was from a guy who bought a used Gaucho from a pawnshop and BM took care of it, no questions asked.

If I remember right, Benchmade will require proof that he is currently active in the army, since the knife is an auto. I don't think they will send out an auto from there factory to anybody but an authorized dealer or a service member. I could be wrong though.

Anyway, even if they didn't warranty it, I am sure that if he told them the story they would refurbish it for a price.

I have never personally used benchmade's warranty service, but I bet in his situation they'd fix it for free.

They didn't ask for any proof of purchase when I sent my mini rukus in a few months ago  they actually didn't ask any questions just took care of the problem and with what I consider a good turn around time (2 weeks).

Send it into BM. They will take care of it.
Don't worry about any type of "proof of perches." It is not needed.
Send a copier of the Mil ID in with the knife.
