I do not own any Emersons yet, but checked out maybe 10 different models at my local knife store today, and all had fit and finish on par with Benchmade, Spyderco, etc, and possibly even better. Will be getting one in couple weeks for sure.Big surprise after reading different experiences on the internet.Liked cqc7 and commander the most, and how it feels in hand! Excellent knives!

Both of those are iconic Emersons. They'll feel differently in hand because of the handle shapes, but they both "feel good". It's taken me a while to get used to the feel of the CQC7 handle shape but I'm starting to come around. The Commanders and CQC15s were a perfect fit right from the get-go.

Enjoy the ride!

Quality has improved for the 2014 models. Looks like the constructtive criticism some
of us had posted in the F&F post was taken to heart. I bought 2 new Emersons and recieved 2 more 2014
models in trade this year and the fit and finish are perfect. Comparing them to my other models from 2009 on up
there is a substantial change in quality.

It seems like Emerson has stepped up their game in recent years and good on them for doing so. The newer models I've handled have all been quite good.

I'm glad to see more people are not believeing the poor fit and finish rumors. I'd say try a Commander as your first Emerson. It's my favorite and has a really awesome history behind the design.

my commander i just got (first emerson) is PERFECT. Fit and Finnish were amazing and I can't put this thing down and I can't stop admiring it. Mine is a 2013 model with stand offs. I want to pick up 2 more Commanders just to collect. I am absolutely in love with the shape and everything. best knife I own besides my Benchmade 810 1401.

I was thinking about getting a cqc 7 or a mini commander as a small boot knife.

The only problem with the commander that I see is sharpening it with my bench stones. I am ordering a spyderco sharp maker soon to better sharpen it.

It's nice to have two versions of the same knife. I say get the Mini Comm first.

When you go the 7 route, I say go Super 7 instead of regular 7. It's going to be closer in size to your current Commander.
If the Commander is a little large for you, a regular 7 will be the ticket.

Congrats on your first, and welcome to the club! There are some of us on here that would not leave the house without an Emerson, and if you carry something else it is in addition to, not instead of, an Emerson.

Now you know why. :tyrannosaurus::D

Sharpmaker works great. Tip: try push sharpening, from 1/8-1/8" back from the tip pushing forward, not pulling toward you with the knife; go kinda slow in speed and have the rod reach the base of the blade when you get to the base of the rod right above the plastic base of the Sharpmaker.

If you pull on the handle of the knife toward you while sharpening and let the tip come all the way off the rod all the time, you will round off the tip. So try it the other way, or toward you in a controlled stroke but stop about 1/4" from the tip. Whichever direction you prefer, what feels better to you. That will keep your point just like it is now.

I find I can control it much easier pushing the blade away from me. If the rod hits the handle end at the base of the blade, no worries. It just taps it maybe, not slams into it.
