Yes it's possible, some modern DVD players can even be reprogrammed via the remote control to omit Regional settings.

Of course. Most of the DVD/DivX players you can buy can have the zone restriction lifted, either from the menu or by updating the firmware. The prices are arround $50-$60 for a decent one AFAK. Peekton PK6005 is a very good example, one of the best DVD/DivX players: compatible with most audio/video codecs, good image and sound, manny type of connectors, etc...

There are firmware hacks for PC drives to make them multi-region. These aren't supported by the drive manufacturers of course, but can be useful. I recommend buying a cheap DVD drive for the purpose so you don't kill a burner or combo drive.

What? bypass region code restrictions! That would be... well... against the wishes of the recording industry.

You can buy region-free DVD players. They're mostly sold for use in academic settings, foreign studies, that sort of thing. And they tend to be expensive.

Now, think like a DVD Player manufacturer. You sell players all over the world in every region. The buttons aren't marked with words like "play" and "fast-forward." No. They're marked with universal icons. The text on the display and any on-screen menus are generated by software and you can program them for any language, even different alphabets. The various safety warnings and regulatory markings are all on a removable label that you can easily change. The power supply is universal and automatically accomodates 120/230V 50/60HZ. So you can quickly change your units to sell in any market. If demand is high in China, you quickly slap on a Chinese safety label, set the menus for Chinese, toss in the right power cord for China and ship it. If demand is high in Europe, just slap on a European safety label, program the menus for English/German/French, toss in a European-style power cord and ship it. And if demand is high in America, you slap on an American safety label, set the menus to default to English, toss in an American-style power cord, and ship it!

But what about region codes? You can't ship the same player to China, Europe, and America because of region codes, so your little scheme is sunk... unless, that is, unless you can come up with a quick way to change a unit's Region Code! And every manufacturer has one. Some of them use a different remote control code. Some have a trap-door where you press two buttons at the same time (maybe track forward and track backward at the same time, for example).

However, you would certainly NOT want that information about how to change the region code of your product or even make your product region-free to leak out and get posted on the internet. No. That would only encourage sales of your product... and you wouldn't want to do that, would you? So, you wouldn't leak that information out such that anyone could go to google and type in the model number of your player and "region free" and find that information. No. You wouldn't do that.

Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more, say nooooh more!

Reading the manual of my Apex dvd player and my PS2, they play any region dvds. This especially comes in handly when I am watching UK Red Dwarf dvds ;)

What Chuck said. They also don't want you to google 'DVD Genie' either as a software player fix. That would be bad. They'd hate that. Works pretty well on most players. But it's bad. Lots. I wouldn't.

They also hate it when you realize the remote control crack for your player gets reset every time you have a power surge (they hate surge protectors too, ornery bastiches), so you cut and paste the crack steps into word, print them with a small font and tape it to the back of the remote.
