I have bought and traded with several makers out there, and am currently working on three custom orders, one involving two knives from a local maker to me. Right now, they are Scott Gossman, Larry Nowicki, and David Farmer. I have met two of them, but have not met David yet. There are other regional makers I would like to meet, and have met. J Neilson I have chatted with, and am a fan of his work. I have met Bud Nealy, who is regional to me, about an hour and a half up the road, I've met him once, and own one of his knives. LR Harner, who is only a half hour up the road from me, is another maker I would like to buy from.
So, to narrow it down, my favorite regional makers are,
Scott Gossman
Larry Nowicki
Bud Nealy
J Neilson
LR Harner (who I have yet to buy from  )
These men are all well known on the Forums, some moreso than others, and all are talented makers in my opinion, and serve different niches of the community. I feel pride in that some are local to me, and some are in my general area (lets say a 100 mile radius). Thanks to the wonder of the internet, as long as I have money or something to trade, I have access to many different makers from all over the world, reputable to boot. But, I take a certain pride in the fact that the makers above are in my general stomping grounds (before gas prices went through the roof, I was a traveler).
Does the fact that a maker resides in your area affect your buying habits? I like the above makers work, and would of course take that as a consideration over where they lived. But do you feel a certain sense of pride about getting a knife from someone in your home state?
