Regrets

There are a handful of Benchmades from year's ago that I either had and sold or never owned in the first place. I regret not taking advantage of the opportunity to buy them when I could (or to just keep them when I had them). The ones that immediately come to mind are :
- Skirmish
- HK 14255 Tanto
- 710-101
- Subrosa

I never owned a Skirmish. Wish I had. Still one of the best looking folders I've ever laid eyes on.

I had a few 14255's. Then foolishly sold them as the years went by. This knife got me hooked on Tanto blades. Prob my fave BM of all time (along with the 710).

The 710-101 was never mine but I still drool over pics of it online. I think it was a Gold Class but I'm not sure of the year when it came out.

I had a Subrosa and I thought it was a wonderful knife. Very attractive too. Then in my heated anti-BM fit of 2013 I sold it off to a friend who had been admiring it. The Subrosa seemed to get discontinued rather quickly. I wonder why (?) I really liked it.

Now I'm rebuilding my Benchmade collection. And I'm not going to make the same mistake twice (famous last words) :)

The only benchmades I regret not buying (more of) are ones with M2 blades.

R.I.P M2

Wow, where do I begin.

Wish I had bought several original AFCK's back in the day when they were readily available. Also all their variants. Same with the Strykers. Over the years I've been lucky enough to pick up some of the ones I really wanted ie: Rukus, replace the CPM-M4 AFCK I sold, Dejavoo, HK 425 & 426 but it took years of patience, luck and having the funds availible at the same time they did come up because that's a real impediment.

Still at the top of the list of ones I'd like to get someday if possible are:

-Shirmish
-D2 AFCK
-M2 AFCK
-Subrosa
-Pinnacle

Of course there are others but that's off the top of my head.

So many knives, so little time, and cash!

I thought this was going to be a thread about BMs you regret buying, lol. In that case, I wish I would have bought the regular Grip over the mini - oh well.
I don't regret not buying anything though, typically. :D

If it helps ease your regrets about the Skirmish, I had one and it was pretty terrible, IMO. I am a huge BM fan, but the Skirmish had some issues. The opening hole is chamfered/beveled, which makes it very hard to get a good purchase/grip on it and open the knife. The lock was also very sticky and hard to disengage. I assumed it would break-in and become easier, but it never did. There was also very little of the display-side scale cut away to grant access to the lock bar, so even if it wasn't so sticky it would still be hard to unlock. Poor design. The S30V also chipped easily under *VERY* light use. Maybe mine got a bad heat treat, but I remember this being common with S30V when it first hit the scene. The Skirmish was stunning to look at, but to use it was pretty bad. I sold mine with no regrets.

Great showpiece, though.

I kind of regret selling my AFCK Axis in D2. I didn't like the knife very much and the design was pretty wrong for my hand (the finger cut-out was way too far away from the blade), but there is just something cool about the AFCK and I think it is a big part of BM history. I highly doubt I will ever be able to easily buy another one, so I kind of regret selling it, but it wasn't a very good knife to use due to the ergonomic mistakes in the design, for my hand at least.

I really miss my RUKUS. Another knife that didn't fit my hand at all (which is why I sold it), but it had such a high cool factor that sometimes I miss playing with it. I think the Contego and Adamas are better knives in every way, though.

No regrets....................
Aside from selling a few early Pacific Cutlery Corp knives.

Thanks for this thread, gonna go punch myself in the face now. :D

My skirmish was stolen out of my car boooo. Monstrous folder. I'll cut the thief up if I ever find out who they were.

Potential regrets, that is, I'm glad I did not get rid of them!

  • 610 Rukus
  • 615 Mini-Rukus
  • 635 Mini-Skirmish
  • 930 Kulgera
  • 425 Gravitator
  • 670 Apparition
  • 790 Subrosa
  • 14250 HK Snody Tanto

Yes, agreed RamZar. I kept the 790 and sold the 930. Sold the 14250 (nice knife) and kept the 14205 and 14210.

At one time, I had about every Pacific Cutlery and post-90's Benchmade ever produced. Blue boxes freakin' everywhere. Sold them all in the early 00's to acquire customs, which were sold to acquire firearms (kept some select customs).

Now I've come full circle, appreciating the utility that Benchmade offers at a price point that I don't mind beating up on, and with really cool features. I pick and choose the current models based on you's guys' feedback, which I appreciate.

A lot of love for M2 in this thread. I have a 730 Ares with M2HS and Carbon Fiber scales and it's a nice knife but it is a bit of a safe queen, so I haven't used it enough to see the edge retention bear out. What do you find appealing about M2HS, versus alternatives like CPM M4??

Hello Concord, former Walnut Creek resident here...now in VA.

M2 is very hard steel and takes an amazing edge. The stuff is so hard that it wore out tooling machinery and Benchmade discontinued production. As to your knife, I wouldn't use it either. One thing to consider; there are M2 blades out there used, and I would seek one of them, as M2 is legendary and for good reason. M4 is great stuff and very close, but many of us own at least one or two M2 versions. They are still out there.

That's interesting, I had no idea it had something to do with factory tooling wear, but that is kind of cool. What you've said makes sense, but it is funny that I'm finding myself simultaneously convinced to not use this knife and impressed that it's a great steel to use.

Thank you.

Here's something I almost regretted. I own a 710, 940, 707, 558 Ritter mini, and 275 Adamas. All of which were gifts from my wife except the 558. A couple months back I had my eyes set on a more expensive knife that I'd thought of funding with 4 of the knives and just keeping the Adamas. The idea was so that she could take the money to buy the other knife and gift it to me for our anniversary and she was ok with it.

Long story short, I backed out and couldn't let myself get rid of my Benchmades, not just because they were gifts, but because they're great knives. I'm extremely glad I didn't go through with it and will just be patient for Christmas to get that other knife. So think twice before you let your knives go unless it's a dire situation.

Once, years ago, I bought a Sebenza. It wasn't a bad knife but it wasn't a Benchmade. I traded it off for a beautiful 690BC1-CF, which I then traded off for something else a while later. I regret doing that; just try to find one of those below $500. Yet I had no regrets trading off the Sebbie.

Maybe some day...:foot:

Yep that's a beautiful knife though with a funky clip. I bet you're kicking yourself over that one. ;) Unless it was a sentimental gift, I wouldn't worry about trading off the Sebenza either. There will always be plenty of those out there.
