Regrind of Busse BATAC

I'm thinking about getting a regrind of my BATAC to closer resemble a K9 Dingo. Has anyone had this done and will it significantly weaken the metal or offset the balance? This is what I had in mind:

If this will be Tom who will be doing it it will be GREAT blade!
He is a wizard of regrinds.

TK isn't called the Grindmonkey for nothing.

Btw...wasn't K9 Knives supposed to be a collabo between Koster and Krein? What happened there.

Hit me by PM if no one wants go put the business on the front page.

DONT overheat it, which is easy to do when your working on an already heat treated blade. Have a bucket of water and keep it cool while grinding. Grind with bare hands, that will help you know when its getting too hot (and gloves getting caught in the grinder is a bad idea anyway).

I talked to Tom Krein. He said he can do some modifications, but the edge indentation and notches on the thumb guard really have to be done to a blade before hardening. He will do the work. Thanks for the suggestions everybody.

How about "Krein regrind" label on the blade? :D

The HG55LE is a nice design, but a reshaped BATAC would be heftier and with less likelihood of the tip breaking off. It would be a short fat bowie type cut.

Tom runs K9 Knives - was always his baby...I was just along for the first lap. :D

The "blood groove" and thumb grooves (jimping) has to be done pre-heat-treat....we had those milled out.

Best bet would be to get in on the next run of Dingo's... :D  :p

(p.s. call Tom, not me!)

:p

I do agree that a clip-point BATAC would be pretty cool !

Thank you, Amy-O. I sent it today to Tom Krein but will remember in the future that you do custom reprofiling. Can you do the thumb grooves by drilling them out or running a small dremmel with the knife in a vice?

I like the design of the K9 Dingo, but they are only being made in S3V steel and I wanted something a bit more stainless for a deployment with the Navy. This is a Busse forum, but I think both the K9 knives and Busse knives are excellent. The design I wished for is a combination of what I like in both designs.

I realize INFI steel is only semi stainless, but probably more so than S3V. I like the Busse BATAC handle as is. For a longer blade that is used for chopping, I'd probably stay with the BATAC design as is, but for a multipurpose knife, it is good to have more of a point.

Here's a clip-point BATAC taken to the logical extreme, shown with a regular profile one for comparison:

BTW, no problems from me for liking Tom's stuff too. I have almost as many Kreins as I have Busses.

I like the non dropped tip in the Active Duty (my favorite Busse), but the BATAC isn't quite long enough to be a great chopper (though I've used mine to split some quartered logs for a firez) and not thin or pointed enough for general utility. I'm hoping to fix that. The steel seems to live up to its hype, though.

Not unless you have the dremel tool from hell. Best done with a milling machine, they could also be done with a drill press and carbide burrs. The fuller you want will be the hardest thing to do, that really needs a milling machine to ensure its done right. Key to any of this is not to overheat the blade and ruin the heat treating.
