Regrind on a Condor Pack Golok?

So I got a pack golok as an early bday present 👍 But oh my is the edge dull and thick. My first thought was to clamp it to the bench and take a file to it. Well the steel is harder than I thought so that was a nogo. I do have a KO worksharp, will it handle the work if I get so e extra coarse belts? Or will I kill the little guy..I don't have any coarse stones, so I might stop by Ace and pick one up.

What would be the best way to proceed?

Thanks,

T

I'd make sure the file you were trying is in good shape. Not sure what the RC is that Condor runs their 1075, but a file in good shape should be able to tackle it maybe and would be my first choice for manual regrind.

After that I'd go for some 80 and 120 grit silicon carbide wet dry. A combination stone is not going to hold up to a serious thinning out of the Golok. I also wouldn't want to guess how many Worksharp belts might be needed, sheet of wet/dry are cheap and come very coarse.

Thanks heavy. Went to some antique tools I have and found a couple files labled "Made in Austria". Much better, not as difficult as planing whire oak, but my arthritis will still be pissed tomorrow

Got a good start taking the edge back just past the original grind lines. Not sure how much to thin it. I will probably blast it and spray some Norrells on it as I am in Fla. Cudos to Y'all that do this every day, I think I need a nap now ;-)

You'd really want something more like a 1hp 2x72 to do the work, but you can do it with smaller grinders or files--it'll just be a lot more work.

No big belt sander..I guess I could chuck a flapper wheel into the lathe and run the blade back and forth..lol..JK...

I'll get there with a file a bit at a time. It definitely cuts better already, just need to figure out where a good stopping point is and how much time I want to waste on it. I will tell my brother to get any further gifts from you Baryonyx and tell him to get the special grade!

Near the tip tends not to be too bad on that model, and others with similar taper like the Golok, but near the base of the blade it's like a cold chisel. :D

Hey please don't disparage cold chisels! Actually a weired grind for me, just off the edge was thicker than the 1/2"-1" off the edge closer to the spine(from hilt moving to tip) but it is getting there.

I do have a speed machete on order, glad I went with having the edge thinned :encouragement:

Thanks guys
