Regrind opinions

Hey all you regrind experts/owners,

I have been reading up on the advantages of getting Tom Krein and what a difference his regrinds make in knife performance. I shot off an e-mail to him explaining what knives I was thinking about getting done and what his opinions were on each blade I had mentioned. I got pricing information from him but nothing on whether some of them should be reground and the edge geometry thinned down, or just resharpened to a different/more acute angle that I can maintain myself. THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT ABOUT TOM KREIN. If anybody reading the above interprets it that way (especially Mr. Krein himself), please realize that it is not. There could be a number of reasons he did not respond, could be very busy, might not have gotten my second e-mail, whatever. Not important.

What I would like to know is what all of you think about what I should do with each of the following knives, and then I can decide based on everybody elses' expertise. I have bought 16-17 knives in the last 8 or so months, so I'm fairly new/slow/stupid about this, but these are the knives I think would benefit from his work. I'll list my other knives as well, and if you guys see anything else I should send to Mr. Krein please let me know. They are almost all in my EDC rotation.

List of what I was thinking of sending:

-Zero Tolerance 0200 in 154CM. Pretty thick blade, might see camping duty
use, but probably not.

-Kershaw Lahar in VG-10. I can sharpen this one quite well, and I'm not too
sure if it's thick enough, but I'm willing to bet he can make it perform
even better. Regrind yes/no?

-Spyderco Military in BG 42. I see that the blade is quite thin near the
tip, so I'm not sure if it's possible or necessary, again this one I seem to
be able to sharpen easily, but I'm guessing nowhere near his level.
Regrind or resharpen to say 30 degrees(15/side)?

-Spyderco native in CPM S30V. I have already seen his work on this one, so
this one I know for sure I would like him to work on.

-Spyderco Endura in VG 10. This one is a combo edge (partially serrated).
Regrind or resharpen?

Other knives:
CS- Recon 1 Tanto

Kershaw- Leek PS, ZT0400(S30V), Blur in SG2

Spyderco- Delica waved PE

Thanks to all who read/respond.

Rik,
Sorry, I try to respond to my emails. Sometimes I just get covered up...

Here is what I would advise.... get a couple done and then see what you think. Out of those posted above I would recommend the Spyderco Native, Endura and Delica. They will be the most improved.

Just my thoughts.

Tom

I agree with Tom's assessment. The BG-42 Military is already thin enough that you would see little improvement from a regrind. Simply taking the edge bevel to 15 per side (or less, depending how you use it) should suffice on it. The others he is doubtless more familiar with than I am.

Hey Tom,

What's your going rate for a full flat grind on a Native?

Thanks,
Mark

I have been carrying these for about a week and I love them. Not certain if my Native was one of the two shown in Tom Krein's thread about Flat Grinding a Spyderco Native in the embellishment section of the forums. Remarkable difference in slicing. I would not have all of my knvies reground, but it is fun feeling what all the buzz is about.

My recommendation is to start with the Native, and the Endura so you have two size blades with the Krein treatment. Use them. Then move forward if with your own opinion on the result. I will probably have an Endura with ZDP full flat ground and a Spyderco Vesuvius with ATS 34 deeper hollow ground to round out my thinner options.

If you want to only do one shipment, then I would follow exactly what Mr. Krein suggested.

Cheers.
