Reground and parkerized BK9

My old beater BK9 was getting in quite a sorry state. It had been left outside stuck in my chopping block for too long, it had some nasty chips and rust that was better than a championship winning beard.

So I took it down to the shop and reground the blade and gave it a nice spanking new suit in form of a parkerized finish (manganese phosphating process for those who want that in technical terms :p)

So far the finish is holding up very nicely indeed and the nice dark gray looks pretty cool too. I've not really beaten to bojangles out of it yet but it will be good to see how well it holds up after a good bit of use.

Any way, here are few crappy pics. I can take a few better ones if people feel I need to. :)

Been checking this out for most of the morning. Very cool looking. VERY cool looking. Might be some parkerizing in my future with some of my knives...

Damn, Haze, that looks completely fantastic!! I love the clip point look on that 9, man, that is mind blowing. The Parkerized finish looks good too.

Thanks for posting that up, talk about a perfect modded bowie. Now, I'm thinking and that ain't easy or good. :D

Frankly that terrifies me, and I live on the other side of the world. :p

The parkerised finish really does look good on that blade. I have a few carbon steel knives that I have done but that 9 defo. looks the best IMO. It literally takes about 30 seconds to do it.......... after you have spent hours cleaning the blade up first though. :D

I know the old Kabar phosphate finish was as tough as woodpecker lips, but you had to soak the blade in oil, to keep the rust at bay. Once it was good and soaked, you never really had to touch it again. Is that phosphate from Brownells?

That is a deep clip point! I like it...a lot! You've given the old '9 a complete makeover!!

If you see a fat guy with a big beard sneaking into your house don't shoot him it's just me coming to play with that knife

That awesome knife

No idea where I got the solution from, even if knew the name of the place it's all Chinese to me. :D

That knife was done in manganese phosphate solution and then boiled in de-ionised water to seal it. I suppose any old water would do but the de-ionised one sounds cooler.

No worries, the fat guy with the big beard that won't shoot you will be me. :D:thumbup:

I like it - I have been thinking that park or hot blue would be good treatments for stripped BKT's. Most park finishes are damn tough

I was thinking about just trying some cold blue on a knife.
I did a Ranger RD-7 once with cold blue and it turned out okay.
Sold it, but I still have a pic. It was actually more even than the picture shows.

Parkerized finish ROCKS !!! I have it on my Mossburg 590 combat shotgun. Tough stuff for sure. I have always wondered why knife mfg companies have not used it more often ? Your knife mods ROCK !!! Looks like you put the BK9 in a drawer with an OKC SP10 Marine Raider Bowie & it had a kid !!!

The clip point on the BK9 is mean looking. You could call it the BK9 Fighting Bowie.

I've cold blued more than a few carbon steel knives. It looks really good on a Mora, especially after you sharpen the primary bevel. The contrast between the blue/black and the shiny wide bevel is great.

Great job! I love parkerize finishes, and that clip is great. That new clip addresses the main problem I had with my BK-9, and that was just not enough point to suit me. I may just have to get another one and try it with a longer straighter clip, a little more like the BK-7...now that I have easy access to belt grinders that should be easily done. That BK-9 was definitely one of the best choppers I ever had.

You Beckerheads are so creative.

Beckers are so awesome. Ethan makes beautiful and quality blades and figures out ways to make them affordable.
