Okay regrind fans, here is the shipment I just got back from Tom.

First up is the Spyderco Native Lightweight. The fresh regrind is a full Convex grind that came back with a micro bevel installed by Tom.

There were two in this shipment but only one is a fresh regrind. The previous Full flat grind just went along for the ride and to have the regrind logo etched in. It is pictured here with the other previous regrind, a Delica 4 Blue FRN ZDP with custom Wave and Flat grind that went in for the regrind logo.

The third one in the pic is a High Hollow grind that I personally did. Tom can comment on some of my other projects that he was able to save for me, but my Native came out well.

Next up are my project knives that Tom saved the Burgandy FRN Goddard and the Vesuvius.

I had tried my hand at Full Flat Grinding after my High Hollow ground Native came out so well. I learned to appreciate Tom’s skill and service even more than I did before I had that experience. I had mostly removed the Sabre Grind but I was uneven all over and got into the serrations a little bit on the clip side back toward the ricasso. Tom did an excellent job on this knife especially given the condition I sent it to him.

I am super pumped about the Vesuvius. That was the very first knife I tried to regrind. I touched it to the wheel a couple times and decided to start on a knife I was less attached to which prompted the Native Lwt regrind. I had purchased the Vesuvius when I landed my first fulltime job after college to be “the knife” that I would carry and use. That went well until I moved to CO and joined the Spyderco crew in the SFO. Tom updated the swedge because of my “tinkering” that I tried before it went to him.

The Barong which has had so much attention lately is next. I will just post these as a testament to what everyone else has said.

Bill Moran’s collaboration with Spyderco has been part of my hunting gear since I picked them up. I was recently reviewing “The Master of the Forge” and thinking about the “Moran grind”. I asked Tom to do full convex grinds on both of these to honor Mr. Moran’s grind. Tom let me know that they required a micro bevel to have an edge hardy enough to maintain structural integrity. They are both so sharp, I have to be careful while sheathing them because they bite into anything that touches the edge.

First up is the FB01 Featherweight.

Second is the FB02 Drop Point.

The last one is going to be especially fun for me. I spoke to Tom yesterday about this one and had told him I would sharpen it further before using it, but I have changed my mind. This knife started its life as a SE Atlantic Salt. I asked Tom to do a High Hollow Grind on it down to 0.004 of an inch. This will be my EDS (Every Day Shaver). Tom let me know that he had polished the edge more than he does on his usual sharpenings. So in light of that, I will try shaving with it as is before sharpening it the way I normally do my dedicated shaving knives. The process and results will be in a separate thread. For now, here are the glamour shots.

I have already been using and carrying the Vesuvius since it has returned.

I must say again, how much I appreciate Tom’s skill, talent and efforts with these knives.

I hope you have all enjoyed this thread.

Wow!

Thanks for taking the time to post all those. If you don't mind my asking, how much was the treatment for the Barong?

Nice thread! The Vesuvius is my favorite out of the bunch. Nice choice of blades to have Tom work his magic on. I just got back from the SFO and I picked up my ZDP mule. I am going to send it for a G10 handle along with a bg42 military to have Tom regrind. What do you think the best grind on a military would be to keep the edge robust but still improve the slicing characteristics?

Beautiful! I have a whole drawer full of blades that I would love to send to Tom. I just need a good big side job to make all the money it would cost for me to send, have them ground, and pay for return.

I would run it by Tom as to how to have the Military reground. My guess would be to keep it a Full Flat Grind, but thin it down to between 0.020 and 0.010 of an inch. My BG42 Military came new at 0.026 which in my opinion is just right for that knife and how I use the Military model. The CPM S90V Military that I carry everyday and have sharpened three times is only 0.031 behind the bevel and I love how it performs! You would notice more of a difference in going from a Saber Flat grind to a Full flat grind than you would in thinning a Military, but it may be just what you are looking for right now. Let us know what you choose to do!

Fantastic results - TK does awesome work, I have one and would like to send a couple more, or order one of his customs.

A non-ZDP or non-S90V regrind for a blade 4" inches or less was $35 but because of the thumb ramp addition, it was an extra $10.

Great bunch of regrinds! I need an EDS, so I need to follow how yours works. I know ZDP-189 shaves nice, but all of mine have points on them. The Atlantic is the perfect knife to start that project with.

Mike

Thanks Mike,

I am hoping to document my first shave with this knife with the edge that Tom created. It is no where as fine a grit as I use, but since he went the extra mile, I need to report back on how it went. My goal is to have the content for that thread photographed, written up and posted on Friday.

Take care,

Doug

Great thread! Lots of good info and pics. I really like the two Morans.

That Vesuvius looks just like a Centofante 3 but with different steel and screws instead of pin construction. Am I missing something?

I'm starting to feel left out, with you guys and all your TK regrinds. Awesome work!
