Regular BG-42? Aside from the birthday card, what am I looking for?

How do I tell if my new BG-42 small Sebenza matches up with it's birthday card, what are the scale or blade markings to look for when I open it up?

Thanks!

A sure fire way is to send it to me. Ofcourse I will have to inspect it for a year or two at which I'll have formed an attachment to it and will be unable to send it back. ...

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. You have a grail of mine and I will leave it at a hearty congratulations!

There is nothing that can match it exactly to the card as the "date of birth" will not match the "date of production" code on the inside of the Sebenza scales. The blade will also have no markings on it, the S30V blades are denoted by the letter "S" on the blade. The BG-42 blades are blank of all text or lettering.

If you have a birthday card, look on the inside of the scales to see if you can match up the dates. There is a difference in BG-42 and S30V, put them side by side and tell us what you see.

Thank you Haze, I had a vague recollection of such but wanted to confirm.

Yes James, sorry, Mr. Rat, that is exactly what I meant :D

I don't have any S30V any more, all are either S35VN or damascus.

What Haze said.

That Mr. Rat stuff...sheeesh!

James works:) ....if that Seb needs a new home I'll pm you my new Addy:)

Congrats again my friend.

The inside of the handle should be marked *96 up to *01 (where * is A, B or C). If your birthdate is in 1998, I would not be concerned if the handles are stamped in 1997; C97 for example. It is not unusual that handles could sit in inventory for a while.
The blade should not have any marking. If the blade is stamped with an S, C or V, than the blade is not BG-42. S30V replaced BG-42 in early 2002.

It's the genuine! Born in a more innocent time, Sept. 11, 2000.

That's basically a spankin' new knife by looks of it, congrats indeed.

Thanks guys, this is as close to unused as it gets.
I was told it lived its first 12 years in a safe.

I have trouble every time I get something like this. I ended up selling my numbered P large & small, but this I think I shall keep, it seems even rarer. I am going to have a very difficult time using it. Anyway, for EDC I love my small starbenza, a couple of my Mnandi's and pretty much all of my Hinderers.
