Regular Blade or Black DLC for my Military

Hi all,

I'm thinking about ordering a Military. I like the way the black DLC looks, and I understand that it holds up very well. But what are the pro's and cons of the black coating? How is it going to hold up 20 years from now? Just curious to hear both sides of the coin on the regular vs. black DLC fans.

Bye the non coated ..... I mean come onnn its s30 it won't rust unless ur..... well just don't buy it coated ..

I'm not too concerned about rust. It's more of the looks of the black blade that I like. Is it easy to get tape residue off of the blade with the black coating? If I cut up some food, am I going to need to worry about staining of the black coating? I mean, it is a knife and I don't intend to baby it, but I'm just curious how it holds up.

I have the same question. I'm about to purchase a citadel, and I like the look of the black on black, but it would bother me if the finish wore poorly or got scratched up.
From what I'm hearing on here and the Spyderco forums, there is little to worry about.
I would like to see some pics of heavy use or older spydies with DLC coat.

Well like I said its late and I prob . Shoukdnt be posting if u know wha I mean but what I find is the non coated is smoother on long cuts and the coating if u plan on using for a long time gets beat up and looks kinda ugly if that ain't a problem and u don't care about sacrificing smoothness is slicing get the dlc

Wo wooo

For me, my collection / light use knives are all satin blades ie look newer for longer not worried about scratching the blade coating, but full on user knives i am quite happy for blacked coating if does not cost a great deal more. At end of day comes down to personal choice . I am sure coating will offer better rust resistence etc but there again will also ware off . cheers

I like the looks of a coated blade....thing to remember is, it is a coating and it will wear with use and time. Don't worry about food prep with a coated blade.....and yes, a coated blade is not as smooth with long cutting strokes as a non coated one.

I have several examples of both.

Performance wise, if the coating is slowing down your cuts, and it bothers you, you are WAY too much of an afi to be using S30V. This DLC coating is about as rough as a sheet of printer paper (which is to say, "NOT VERY rough"). If that level of finish is a hinderance to your use, I would really suggest a thinner blade an a steel that is more capable of supporting a thinner bevel.

The black holds up well. A little over a year on mine and I thought it was getting lighter until I sprayed some WD-40 on it and darned if it does not look brand new! 20 years?!? Dude!, you are on a knife forum...if you are anything like anyone else here, you will not be using one knife exclusively for the next 20 years....so why concern yourself with things like that?

More to the point, will you still think black is cool in one year...or two? That is the only real concern here. I love mine, it is holding up great...the action is as smooth, and the cutting performance is as good as (or better than) any other S30V blade I have in this blade thickness.
