Regular or Classic

Well ive been saving for a year, and now have enough for a sebenza. But have encountered a problem. Regular or Classic. The classic looks far easier to open and i prefer the simpler lines and how the handle increses in size but i prefer the regulars blade shape. So since the blade is the main point of the knife its pretty important. Im not yet willing to buy two and swap out blades.
So i was wondering is there a difference in ease of opening. And does the slight difference in blade shape affect the performance greatly.

The blades are not swappable between the classic and regular. The blades are hand fitted into the frame, plus the classic's blade is a tad longer and would stick out the butt of the regular's handle. Just so you know before you spend that hard earned cash on two! In my experience, the blade shape matters little, especially on the smaller variants.

Two points to note:
  • classic blades are not compatible with regular handles (and vice versa)
  • even staying within models (classic or regular), blades and handles are custom fit to each other and NOT interchangeable.
Accordingly, blade swapping voids the CRK warranty.

Having said that, your classic vs. regular dilemma is a common one, and there are several threads that discuss this. Here's one of them:

Good luck with your selections.

I asked the very same question before I bought mine a couple months ago. The question gets asked a lot and the consensus is that most prefer the blade of the regular, and the handle of the classic, just like you.

I personally felt that the blade shape was more important than the handle, so I went with the small regular. I recently got a chance to handle a small classic sebenza, and in my opinion, both are very easy to open and close, and I could not tell much of a difference. So, ease of opening/closing should not be too much of a factor in your decision.

Here's another thread for you to read. Good luck.

Although the regular Sebenza design is more utilitarian the classic is ergonomically more comfortable. I think a big factor is whether you are getting a small or large Seb. In using the small ones I don't think you will find much difference in the blade performance. The large Sebenza's on the other hand make a big difference in usage. I prefer the large regular for everyday chores and field work; where the large classic is more of a fighter styled knife that lends itself to finer work, i.e. a good thorn picker!
:)

Well my mistake on the swapping blades. Im considering getting a small seb. It says somewhere that the classic has a dog bone style handle. would this improve grip.

I think the Classic`s "dogbone" design is pretty cool. As far as grip, Ive never handled a Regular, but think that the Classic fits my hand quite nicely. It rests rests well and stable in it.

Of course this is all depends on ones personal likes and dislikes, so I guess it would be best if you handled both designs before you go ahead and buy.
Im guessing though, that it would be similary hard for you to get your hands on them, as it was for me (no CRK dealers around here). So I just went with the design that I liked best-the Classic-and I havent been disappointed! :) ;)

Good luck. :)

I think that you should seriously consider the micarta inlay. It fills the hand better. I really think they are worth the money.

Am I right in thinking that the large Regular has a 3 1/2" blade and the Classic is longer ? (An important consideration for me since some of the jurisdictions that I travel through mandate that a knife blade can be no longer than 3 1/2") - - - Thanks, -
