Well, I’ve been carrying my PM2 again this last few weeks and, after shying away from prying some stuff with it for fear of breaking that oh so dainty tip, I was pondering to me self why there isn’t a regular production sabre grind version of it?

I mean the PM2’s only real Achilles heel (for abusers like myself) is its weak tip.

And being marketed as a military type folder, surely there should be a readily available version that can stand up to some prying type abuse?

We know they can do it - we know there is demand - see the tanto and Ernie wave limited versions that are impossible for us aussies to get.

They seem to be able to churn out regular production ffg and sabre versions of the delica, endura, endela, police, dragonfly, ladybug, rescue, pacific salt, salt2, Atlantic salt, etc.

Why not on their most popular platform????

Also a sabre grind would go nicely with a spyderedge…

Very much not. And way overpriced on the second hand market expect to pay ~$300-400
Yeh that’s my experience with both the waved version and the tanto. Plus being down under most of the dealers that get the exclusives don’t/ won’t ship here.

I just picked up a NIB DLC tanto for 259$ shipped. Which is about what they have been going for on the sales, here. (Atleast that I have seen, when still for sale or sold with a price showing)

But wouldn’t you rather a tougher bladed pm2 just be part of the regular line up?

the over inflated price of the tant and the Ernie version shows me that there is demand for a pm2 that can be abused.

I mean surely it’d sell better than the pkal or little native wharncliffe or whatever other unpopular mingas that are clogging up the USA production line…

Out of all my Spyderco's, which is just about every model, the PM2 gets the least carry. Not because of the blade, but because of the in pocket feel.
Like when I go to reach in my pocket, it seems to be the most noticeable knife and in the way.
So my opinion on it, isn't much help for needing a PM2 with another blade. Still wouldn't be my go to.

I wonder why people always seem to think that *everyone* should want whatever they themselves want. "Make it regular production because I want one."

Hi Matt,

We make a lot of models to try to serve a fairly broad market. Knives that are made for harder use are generally thicker, like the Shaman, but slicing is affected. We'll watch the thread and see if there is a large enough market to make the thicker versions.

Maybe a Dyad PM2? Half of it the normal sharp blade and then a folding prybar scabbed on?

I like the saber on the PM2 waved. It's got a beast of a tip.

Fortunately have two already though. Both were on the secondary market for like $160-170. I don't think I've ever seen them over the low $200s(?)

A tanto may be a little more durable as a prying tool, but it's still very easy to break the tip. Take it from someone who has experienced it first hand.

A pry bar or even flat head screwdriver is a much better tool for the job.

I appreciate the blade shape of the pm2. The thin tip almost scared me away from getting one, but I'm glad I tried one. I appreciate the performance of it and how well it does it's main job which is slicing things. I now feel like the pm2 blade is pretty middle ground, covering most uses for most people while still cutting well. Its thinner than my knives from other manufacturers, but it's also noticeably thicker than the blade on my delica 4. The pm2 is .140 stock, my delica is .090 stock. I know it's the opposite of the delima your in but I would love to see a paramilitary2 made in .090 or even .080 stock to slice as good as my delica with the ergonomics of the pm2.

But I understand spyderco has limits on what they manufacture and have to try to cover as many bases as they can, and there's benefits to have a well balanced blade vs super thin/thick. I think they struck a great balance with the pm2 blade as it is now.

Maybe a shaman might be a good fit for you? I've never held one but it seems beefier with the same compression lock.

To me it would defeat the whole reason I might reach for a PM2. A saber grind version would lose so much of the ease of cutting with the added thickness. If I was going to pry with a knife I would pick a knife more suited for that type of use rather than try to change one that's the complete opposite of that.

This is my opinion too. I carry a leatherman of some kind dropped in my pocket for prying and such activities. I never even use my benchmade to pry, as thick as it is.

Perhaps there isn’t a big market, or at least it’s not represented in this sub forum. I’d wager the dedicated spyder fans here would prefer the ffg and more effective slicing over a tougher every day beater like the guys in an Emerson forum or the like. Maybe this thread should move to general to get the ‘layman’s’ view on things

Would be interesting to hear how the Sabre grind delica/endura sell compared to the regular model - one would imagine potentially a similar split.

For me, I’ve been using Spydercos for about 20 years and have always preferred the thicker tips of the Sabre grind. I have a shaman and really like it, but the lighter weight and slimmer pm2 platform has some advantages for me over the shaman in terms of ease of carry.

Funny, after initially shying away from spydercos because I thought they were ugly, I ended up getting my first one after a work colleague recommended them. He told me that they were a favourite in his SAS unit and could take a beating. that being said even he thought my old green CPMD2 paramilitary original was too delicate… although it did ok back when I worked on site. Now I really need to dig out that old knife. Good old days with that foliage green g10. Now come to think of it… a sprint foliage green cpmd2 pm2 would be cuel

Well I mean they already make a ‘changed opposite version’ or two in the tanto and waved varieties. Surely it would be a positive even if they just made one of those a regular production model to give Neanderthals like me an option. And judging from the popularity of those two models, I’m not sure why they wouldn’t? Surely it would sell better than the little native wharncliffe, yojumbo etc.

Interesting album posted over at Reddit re the problem with a ffg combined with an opening hole - imagine this might of been why old spydys often had Sabre or hollow grinds that didn’t run past the hole?

Imgur album - snapped ffg spydercos
I know spyderco doesn't replace blades if you snapped the tip off or something. But a total blade failure like that looks like a rare case of too much stress in the steel or something from manufacturing. Would they warranty out the blades in this type of case?
