I'm new to both this forum and my quest to make my first knife (and blacksmith work in general). I have almost everything I think I need, but would like some direction on what kind of propane regulators everyone is using and any other recommendations in general. I plan to use two 20lb. tanks and set it up through a main line with a needle valve idle to save gas. I've read just enough to be dangerous and I've held back on using a regular grill type regulator.

Thank you in advance for any info you can provide.

I use a roofing torch regulator on my forge but a gas grill/turkey fryer setup will work fine, also I was a little surprised when I switched my torches over to propane from acetylene that you can use the same regulator

You can get a regulator, gauge, and hose from High temp Tools and Refractory. They sell all the forge items and materials you will need. A good addition is the propane quick connect fitting. It has an on-off valve and the QC. really nice fro unhooking the hose from the forge to put the gas bottle away for the night. wwwhightemptools.com

Just ordered two if these for my new forges,

Amazon had best prices. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D2ZVTZK/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks for all the info guys...

I am using a Venturi burner, but I plan on getting a T-Rex if I can ever get him to call me back or respond to emails. Will this make a difference in what type of regulator that I should choose?? I don't want to purchase one now and ten have to buy another type after I get a T-Rex.

A 20-30 psi regulator should do fine on a single burner forge. Mine is 20 for a smallish forge and I haven't even pumped it all the way but for a test. Then again, all I do is heat treat in it, so YMMV. Most single Venturi burners will likely not run much higher than 30 psi max anyway if I recall.

My single burner I have had up to over 45psi. But got way too hot so I turned back down to under 30. I had been using a welding regulator I had but these new goss regulators are much more accurate. The welding reg had 5 psi marks while the goss has 1 psi marks. They are much better quality than the one I purchased years ago. Don't know the brand but it was red with a plastic adjustment knob. If fell apart after about 3 years and is why I went back to the welding regs (before the goss). But you can pay $150+ for a good welding regulator or $85 for a goss. either will work great.

Ive been running that same Goss that Chuck linked, for about 8 years with never a problem. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
I've also run acetylene regs just fine, as well as the cheaper red Fisher regulators.

For now I picked up the Bayou Classic 0-30 with the steel braided hose, just because I'm spending so much on the burner and I have to keep the budget within reason...

Thanks for all the info, maybe someday I'll be able to pick up a Goss??

Now onto forge construction. I have a small and temporary setup that is working fine, but isn't very efficient. I ultimately want to build a forge around the T-Rex to get the most efficiency out of my propane. I already have the materials to setup a bypass through a needle valve for setting an idle mode between heating.

Any threads already started that go in depth on forge construction?
