My first attempt. About 90% complete at this point. Leather washers with stainless butt cap and guard. Going for an antique finish/look

I've been working on it on and off for the last three or four months, 10min here, 30min there. I went with a Tung Oil treatment on the leather, it seems to work ok and not too slick when wet. Fabricating and fitting the stainless hardware was the most labor intensive, yet I probably could have completed from start to finish in about a week if I had not allowed myself to be distracted with other projects.

Something about that looks strikingly familar:) great job you got to let us know how it feels when you chop with it.

Thank you for the compliments.
I am going to try incorporating thicker hilt and but cap material and a sub-hilt on my next project. Maybe spalted or burled wood instead of leather, or maybe linnen micarta spacers with leather, or............................

WHOAH!!!
thats one sweet hand job... no pun intended :)

will you be offering this service to the general public? ;) :D

very very nice. even more pictures requested!

nice job, i like it. while i tend to prefer traditional grips on knives, this one somehow has that air about it, it fits. the knife looks happy in it's new clothes.

That kills! I was just talking to somebody about doing just this on another forum!

I would think that leather would stand up to the shock and even absorb some of it better than almost anything else

To Andy,

Guard(hilt?) and butt cap are of 316 stainless 1/8" sheet stock. Roughed out the general shape with shear press, then tuned the shape i wanted a bit closer on the belt sander to what I was shooting for. Then fitted to tang with jewelers files and a little dremmel work. Used various belt tension settings on belt sander to blend the guard and butt cap to handle contours during the overall handle shaping process.

Jaiofspam, I don't think I am quite good enough yet to offer service to the public. Maybe some day I will be confident enough to do so.

Again, thanks for the feed back from all.

I elected to bypass the preassembly method and I stacked/compressed the leather directly on the blade tang between the stainless guard and butt cap. By threading the end of the tang and using a nut, I could compress and form the washers directly to the tang for a very tight and uniform fit to the tang.
