I got this 14" BDC on Thursday. The horn handles had to go. I picked out a good piece of bocote and finished it up today.

This is my first HI Khukri, and not my last. I have a Karda, but that doesn't count. Also my second rehandle project.

Still have to finish the karda. I have step by step pictures if anyone is interested.

Man, that is Nice!! I love Bocote. You should post up the step by step if you get a chance. I am sure people would love to see it. Thanks for the pics!

You got it!

I got this lovely 14" Khukri yesterday in the mail from Jai. It is a lovely little Khuk, but the horn scaless had to go. They were just too slippery.

So, I still have a bunch of great bocote lying around. I chose the piece with the tightest grain and best figuring.

First I took off the old horn scales.

The bolsters were filled with epoxy and little bits of paper in the bottom. The paper was newspaper. From what I could make out they were scraps from the employment section. I hope the Kamis were not looking for other jobs!

I cleaned up the tang a little bit.

Chose the best piece for the scales.

Got the scales cut to size.

Drilled out the pin holes.

Made sure everything lined up.

I made some little pieces from scrap to fit in the bolsters.

Now we wait!!! :imp:

I mixed some sawdust with the epoxy to help the color match up. My biggest concern is the bolsters because they didn't quite line up perfectly. I put in plenty of epoxy so I shouldn't have any gaps. The pins are pretty ghetto. The originals were really soft and bent when I took off the scales. The tang holes were larger than the pins. I went with some old aluminum tent stakes for the pins.

Now once everything dries I can finish it up tomorrow!!

Aw Hell, that's beautiful!

Thanks for putting up the step-by-steps.

Question: how did you get the old scales off the rivet/pins? Did you drill out one side of the pins or break the scales?

I cut a notch in the first scale and just broke it off. The pins were really soft, I cut them with a linesmans pliers. I was able to get a chisel between the tang and the scales and just pry them out.

ilbruche, that is very fine work. Thanks for the tutorial, too. Bocote sure is a beautiful wood, isn't it?

Curious, why you didn't extend the scales into the bolster. I know it's a bunch more work.

Exactly. Too much work for me!

Since the bolsters originally just had some paper scraps and laha in them I figured putting the little bocote pieces in there would be better than nothing.

Maybe if I had more patience or experience I'd do it that way.

Wasn't a criticism, you understand.

Is that kingwood on the karda(?).?

It's actually the chakmak, and it is bocote also.

I'm doing the karda with a little piece of deer antler and bocote. It was just going to be bocote but I loaned the drill to a friend and my dremel cutter wouldn't get in deep enough to fit the tang. So since I was too impatient to wait for the drill I decided to use the antler to make up the room. :D

I'll do that tomorrow after work.

gorjus work, AND gorjus photos - what's the camera? nice work!

It is a Canon A710 IS. I sold all my SLR lenses because I realized I wanted some better ones. Just haven't stopped buying knives long enough to get new ones.

This one works good for hiking when I don't want to carry a big SLR around.

Beautiful handle, great work

I saw the step by step, but don't recall seeing the finished handle before... NICE!

And how shiny can that blade get? Did Jai Renaissance Wax it up prior to parting with it?

I'm sure he did! Next arrival will be a 22" dui chirra with full set of antler tools.

Needless to say I'm excited.

I'm going to have a snap side sheath made up for this one. It should be a stout rig that will fit chakmak, karda a firesteel and maybe a stone.
