well, I'm starting to like traditonal bushcraft knives, so I want to move on from my clipper and make a handle for a blank blade. So has anyone here sucessfully done this?
Thanks in advance,
Eric
I did a project like this recently with a Frosts 4.25" laminated carbon Mora blade that had a 4.25" rattail tang. I used a worn out hatchet handle, a bit of scrap aircraft grade aluminum, a piece of brass tubing, some 1.5" wide scrap leather strapping pieces originally sold for horse tack repair, and some JB Weld steel epoxy. The hone is an EZ-Lap 1"x3" diamond hone and the magnesium fire tool was made by Horseshoe Mountain www.hmfire.com
IIRC, the blade blank I used is the same blade that is fitted with the factory Mora that Mors Kochansky is so fond of and uses in his book, 'Bushcraft'.
eric i have done this for two blades a stick tang and a full tang, the full tang is easier, there are a whole bunch of blades out there available in carbon and stainless, making handle slabs and shaping them is not that hard i used a jig saw and a dremel tool and a small belt sander from harbor freight 50 bucks, although mrostov makes a very nice knife, mine was not as well done as his but certainly servicable and you get to make it yourself so it is what you want and the handle is what you want. i have used the antler and oak and rosewood easily shaped with a dremel and sanded smooth. i am not a knife maker by any means but i think you can get this done. if you know a wood worker he woudl be of great assistance.
That's a great looking project. I love that sheath. I have a Mora #1 blade sitting in the workshop and a nice solid piece of black cowhorn for a handle once I get some time. Let's see, I'm 41 now, can retire at 65... Mac
