I was refinishing my leather washer handle on my Estwing hatchet which I love by the way- when I came across this very old Case fixed blade (I am pretty sure even though I can't find any markings on it- my Grandpa was partial to Case) on my Grandpa's work bench.
I decided that we could make a project out of it and do it together. So I found an old dowel and cut it to size, then halved it, made a notch by hand with a file, drilled an extra hole through the tang, tapped the hole by hand, used a long screw through the holes and cut them by hand, and began filing. I had to make a couple of leather washers by hand and used wood putty to fill the gaps. I then used mahogany stain and z spar spar varnish- which is what I was using on my hatchet to make them impervious to the elements.
After insisting I try my hand at jigging to try and match the folding hunter knife here, I used the drill press and I think it came out fairly decent.
I don't know about it affecting the "colectability" of the knife, nor do I care- I just know that my grandfather enjoys our projects and the time spent with him. I intend to use it lightly and pass it on to my sons someday.
