I'm rehandling an old Schrade Walden Splitback Gentleman's knife, it originally had gorgeous MOP scales but they were cracked and chipped at the pins and very loose.
So I have a bunch of ivory veneer from an old piano and the pieces were the perfect size to make the scales of I double them up. I glued 2 pieces together with crazy glue clamped it till it set and that was perfect for one scale as far as thickness so I made 1 more.
After telling holes for the pins and shaping the ivory to fit I was happy with the first try, I'm gonna make another set and glue those on, (I just wanna make it fit better, the first set was a test run to see if they would work) here's where my question comes in...
While cleaning the scales with a little soap and water I noticed how they sucked the water right in and swelled up, is there anything I can use to seal the ivory with to make it water proof or sound I just use mineral oil and if I use mineral oil will that prevent me from being able to polish/buff the ivory to a nice shine?
When I redo the scales I'll take some pics and post it as a WIP.
