I'm sure a lot of you have rehandled your Swiss Army Knives, and I'm sure I've seen threads on the topic, but a few searches yielded no useful results. Can anyone give me some advice on this (what kind of epoxy, should I shape the scales before or after attaching them to the handle, etc.)? I think I can stumble through most of the process (but advice/examples are very welcome), however I'm not sure what to do about the brass rivets. If I sand them smooth, will the knife still function correctly, or will the rivets fall out? If I have to leave them, what's the easiest way to accomodate them in the new scales? Thanks for the assistance.

I've rehandled a lot of SAKS for many people on this and the other forum. Here's a link to my website http://mywebpages.comcast.net/knifecoop/.

The best practice is to take off the plastic SAK handles and use them as a template to shape the new handles. Do not grind off the brass rivets as your SAK will come apart! Just use a drill pres back and drill the handle slabs to accomodate the SAK rivets. There are several good industrial epoxies out there just make sure that you rough up the SAL aluminum handle liner and that all is clean and free of oil before applying the adhesive. Also if you like you can do cut outs for the toothpick and tweezers by hand. Although to make things much easier I use a milling machine.

What a great idea. i have an SAK a friend gave me years ago and the handles are loose and come off. Seems I have some elk antler here.....Now I know what I am doing next week:) Thanks and Take Care!!!
