guys now one of my kuks has handle slabs that has shrunk a bit below the steel of the tang now i know about rehydrating the wood slabs any idea how long it takes for the slabs to swell back to normal when soaking in linseed or mineral oil(baby oil) i can live with it as it is or file the tang down a bit just wondering how long it would take if i decided to go the oil way
thanks mick

Depends how thirsty the wood is as well as what kind of wood it is, Mick.

I've hit some handles with a little bit of Pledge and let it soak in over night and they plumped right up.

I've also soaked some over night in linseed with nary a budge. Usually though, a good 8 hours and the wood seems as hydrated as it is going to get...YMMV.

lal chatri,

Do you mind if i asked where do you store them?
I'm staying close to coast so i have to re-oil my khuks quite often.

I often soak them heavily and wipe them dry and add another layer of beeswax just to add in more moisture and protection from insects.

Jay can you elaborate on the use of beeswax? I have a puck here I use for edging leather.
Thanks,
Ray

some good info there guys thank you jay the folkes i get some of my kuks from live as far south in the uk as you can go i live in north yorkshire which is usually a lot more temperate than the states so wood shrinkage aint such a problem as say nevada or arizona or the hotter states in america steely hi dont know what type of wood it is but its very pale allmost like neem its not an hi product so i cant say for sure its the iraqi freedom model from khukuri house sorry about naming the opposition.
