REI red 556.

does anyone know if they still sell the red 556 at REI? I don't see it on their website.
 
You may be able to find it in local stores (that's a pretty good chance), but it's long gone from their website. I was able to find the Mini Barrage locally about 18 months after it had disappeared from the REI website. I don't know if they can search local store inventory - you may have to just call around, not sure.
 
Trust me, been there done that recently: REI online database does NOT include or show local store inventory. For that, you have to get the phone numbers of the physical stores and start calling each one.

Good news: once you find it, that store can charge your card for standard shipping and ship it to you directly from the store.
 
If you can't find one, you can order the exact same knife from the Custom Grip program...
IIRC, they were red scales, black MDP point in S30V ?
 
I think it used to be there, but I could be wrong. It isn't there now, though, which is why I didn't mention that as an alternative. I think REI sold quite a few of those, so you should be able to find one in the pre-owned market if you look a while. Sometimes the hunt is as much fun as the final success. :)

That's weird. Like you said, I know it use to be on there. I didn't bother looking to see if it still was though
 
Knifeworks somehow got some of them (100-ish, maybe?), black blade, plain edge. Seem to be sold out on their site, but might be worth calling them to see if they've got any more laying around (they always seem to have some interesting stuff come up on their inventory clearance sales).

I got one of them (from KW), perfect blade centering and action, good even edge. Wiped a little bit of excess oil off of the pivot and I have absolutely no complaints.
 
For what it's worth, which might be nothing, the red on the REI exclusive was not the same as the traditional trainer red. It is a little brighter and has a little more blue in it. It's nice, but it doesn't match the red used in the large Grip trainers.
 
wow! the red mini grip is extremely difficult to find! I figured I could find at least one for sale on the world wide web. oh well I'm still on the hunt for one.
 
REI crimson 556 are all serrated blade (S or SBK). I stopped by at local REI on Sunday, inventory check indicates that there are 3 stores with 1 in stock. (556s--1201 only. no more SBK model) Which most likely means there's no more. Still worth a shot. Call REI & get the phone no. then start call around. I found one via this route previously.
 
Most of the REI Benchmades have been serrated (actually PS or CE). Too bad, IMHO...
 
I stumbled onto an REI version. Serrated without the blade coating. No I didn't buy it, but a little searching on one of the auction sites should locate it
 
Baja 820, hope u found one. I placed special order on Sunday and just got another one through mail today. As I mentioned as above there was 3, now should be 2. the price is unbeatable for s30v with crimson handle! if u don't mind SE blade get one while u can, use the heck out of it then get the replacement blade through Benchmade c/s. that'll be still cheaper than getting new 556 with any S30v blade. that's my $0.02.

Just called around to the REIs that have it 'in stock'. None of the stores can find the single inventory item they have left.

I'm still looking for one too if anyone has one they are looking to get rid of...
