REI Ultra Light jacket

i dont have one but i have tried it on.. saw the price and ran like hell. REI clothes are very well made. they have a top of the line company make their stuff from clothes to tents. ill say it has great quality. i normally go to sierra trading post before i go anywhere else they may have something similar from a well known brand for half that price.

STP usually has some Marmot shells, though you have to wait for the best pricing and sale/coupon combo sometimes. That looks closer to the Marmot Oracle I had(and sold like a moron) than my PreCip. The Oracle was heavier, but a nicer jacket. I love Marmot's stuff, and have gotten about 7 of their clothing items from STP for half or less what you'd normally pay.

Well, I looked on STP and didn't see anything with the same features for close to the same money- they really have some expensive stuff!

OwenM, you're right, it is much closer to the Oracle than the Precip. BTW, they have Precips on sale on STP. I liked the Precip, but from reading what reviews I could find, it's probably not up to the use I plan for it. I did like the Oracle almost as well as the REI, but it's $45 more and in some ways the REI beats it (better hood, better pockets, but the Oracle looks better).

JohnWayne, is their a particular Patagonia you think beats it?

I agree it's not a cheap jacket, but it's actually a bargain compared to other jackets with the same features- Lightweight, waterPROOF, lots of pockets, zip off or roll-up hood (best designed hood I've seen), seems very breathable in the store (plus pit zips).

I tried this one at my local sporting goods store and loved it, I'm thinking of going back for it.

damn fine jacket there.. curious if patagonia makes some of REI's stuff? either way OP, you cant lose.. however, keep checking STP. what on there today maybe different tomorrow. i found a columbia titanium rain jacket (the best columbia had to offer) for 50 bucks. the original price was 150 bucks.. i love that jacket too. bomb and water proof :D.. my dad has the same jacket but with a liner coat on the inside and got both for 100 bucks and the original price was 250. he loves his as well. STP has some killer deals. you just have to keep checking.

By the way MVF, REI is offering memnbers 20%off a single item this week, wich would save you a chunk off that REi jacket.

Thanks for the heads up! Looks like REI carries it, so I'll check it out before I buy whichever. It looks like they have Mountain Hardwares version on sale, too- and North Face has one in the race, too. 20% off sure helps!

Arcteryx makes some excellent ones as well. I picked up a new one for 1/2 price off the bay. It weighes 11oz and rolls up to the size of a pair of gloves. I carry this in my daily carry bag and depend on it more in a pinch rather than a primary. I use a TNF full size 3-ply parka as my primary. My concern for these ultralights is their durability. Excellent for an emergency thou. In a true emergency, it is used to destruction, but does its job, I am not going to worry about it.
