Reil-type venturi questions...

Well, I finally assembled my forge last night. While the clay/ash/sand started to dry, I messed around with my propane venturi. I've built one other before with a partner, and his used a welding gas-type regulator.

Mine uses the standard propane regulator and does not appear to get enough pressure. I use the #60 hole drilled in a 1/8" pipe nipple to feed the venturi.

Can anyone suggest options to get the flame pressure up? Can I safely remove the regulator, or should I replace it with a welding-type? Should I enlarge the #60 hole?

Thanks!

Mike

i use a standard regulator the kind you use for air tools. and the hole is #60 in my burner i use consists of a 2" to 1 1/4 reducer and a 3/8 nipple its a lot bigger than ron reils standard design i did have problems with over pressure and it was running too rich but i solved this by hooking up a 50 cfpm blower with a reostat so i could regulate the air flow to the burner which allows me to controll the temp of the forge some what. what size line and regulator are you using and are you using ron's exact design burner tube length nozzle etc. check out ron's home page he has a in depth troble shooting chart for his burner. email me if you have any questions at red95gt@earthlink.net

Michael. are you using aan adjustable propane regulator or one of the preset ones from a BBQ?
The BBQ type may not have enough pressure.

I wouldn't advice using an air regulator for a gas application.

Thanks guys. I RTFM'd Ron's page which states that BBQ regulators don't cut it. It's back to the store to find a Fuller-type regulator.

I appreciate the feedback.

Michael, I bought a 0-30 psi regulator from Centaur forge and my Reil style EZ burner works great even in open air. I have noticed that Lowe's occasionally carries a cheap adjustable 0-30 psi regulator in their barbecue area. -Guy Thomas

I got my regulator & lines from McMaster-Car. If you ever get down to the southcoast look me up and we can compare notes.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. This weekend I went to a welder's supply and bought a regulator. Makes a huge difference.

Now if my clay/ash/sand will dry
