I was reading thru THIS thread posted by Darrel Ralph from several months back on designing a new pocket clip. Well, Im too late to win the proto he was offering, but thought I should share my clip idea provoked by that thread...

Using my once forgotten skills from a HS cad drafting class, i threw together these pretty self explanatory images. This spring loaded clip hides itself in a recessed area on the handle. Pushing the "button" on the reverse side extend the clip away from the handle to clip onto your pocket. This design could only work for tip up carry, but perhaps some serious enginering could produce a tip down carry configuration

I think its very a cool design and adds to the gizmo factor that prepetuates unnececary knife purchases

. (i can only wonder of it has ever been used before)...Well, what do you guys think? Whats good? Whats missing? What should be changed? Wheres the patent office???

I think that's a great idea. The clip should probably have some kind of curve to it, instead of just being straight - I'm not sure why, I imagine it would work better w/a curve. But this design would eliminate the problem of the clip making the knife thicker and the problem that most knives feel better in the hand without the clip. I'd buy one.

Yeah, you are right to bring that up. I did not mean to imply that the clip was a flat plane. I imagine it follow the contours of the handle, but its hard to illustrate that using a crappy MS paint program. What i like is how it sits recessed in the handle, much like the button on the boker toplocks...

Very nice!

I mentioned a spring loaded clip one time. Maybe I saw the thread you mentioned, or one like it. I got the idea from a couple of expensive pens I have seen with them. Of course I did not carry through like you did.

That is another good point...similar to the discussions in the balisong forum over how the latch gate on the new BM 42 lengthens the handles a bit to widen the blade to handle ratio. A tip down config would be more desireable for some (including me) but there might be ways to have it tip up w/o lengthening the handle too much

geez, im starting to talk like this concept is already being used....

Here's my idea... (copyright me, 2000)

can you hook the screw on the clip to the pivot rod the blade spins on, so as you open the blade, the clip retracts itself?

Just an idea I've been tossing around.

Eric

Yeah, the pivot area could work like a cresent wrench...when the blade opens, the clip retracts...as it closes, the clip pops back out.

That would ROCK!!!
