i've pretty much decided to buy a rekat fang neck knife, but i've heard it comes with 2 different types of steel? can someone please let me know the pros/cons in the 2 different materials used? from what i've heard the price difference isn't that big (one of them used to be a lot more expensive) also links to sites selling both would be nice... which one would YOU recommend? thanks! from what i've seen of this knife so far, it looks great!! :-)

Hey Chariot,

I'm not positive, but I think the REKAT Hobbit Fang has been discontinued. That doesn't mean that you won't be able to find one, it just might be tough.

The only steel that I've seen on the Fang is the 1095 High Carbon steel and it has a green finish on it to discourage rusting. Good all-around blade material, easy to sharpen and with a little maintenance will perform great.

Chariot- I believe these also came in ATS-34. Yes, they have been discontinued, but can still be found. Check at the Round Eye Forum and you'll find quite a few fans of this model. 1SKS still lists the 1095 model for sale.

Try Dennis at Wright Knife too, he had some the last time I was there. I've included his email address;

The 1095 high-carbon, non-stainless aren't bad, mainly because the Black-T coat helps with possible corrosion issues.

The ATS34 stainless is still more desireable, to me...basically, this is a very good stainless, won't hold an edge quite like 1095 but comes close. And for a neck knife carried near the skin (and sweat), it seems like a better idea.

As the production run ended, Bob Taylor of REKAT claims they ran out of 1095 blanks, took some ATS34 specimens and gave 'em a Black-T coating, blowing them out the door as 1095. They didn't want to spend money on new labeling proceedures for a product going away. There's still a way of IDing these oddballs, which are probably the most desirable of all the Fangs

. Certainly the rarest; about 50 total.

See also this thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum22/HTML/000451.html - there's also nitty gritties on the steels, lots of good stuff

. Regarding the title, I don't personally consider REKAT's actions in this matter "fraud" and I'm personally a satisfied REKAT customer (Sifu).

thanks for the post, it was an interesting thread to read. still confused though :-)
my needs is not a fang for utility, my only concern is having it as a self-defense last resort knife which mean i doubt i will pull it very often.

from what i've read most prefer ats34 (not sure that's the choice for me considering self-defense, or if it makes a difference at all) so i gotta go check and see if someone still got the ats34 at a good price... suggestions welcome.

We are out right now but we have found some and they should be in next week.
