I just spotted the REKAT Hobbit and I think I have to get it. Before impulse sets in, does anyone have experience with this knife? What do you think? Quality, handling, etc.
Thanks in advance.
FM.

the hobbit is cool looking, have thought about getting one, BUT they are not legal, we dont think, in TX, due to the double edge design - other than that, and i have looked at them, a good knife imho - if they wouldnt sharpen that 3/4 of an " or so it would be legal, hello REKAT!!! now its in a grey area maybe legal/maybe not

The REKAT Pocket Hobbit is a good, solid, well-made, unique "fighting folder". It is made with G-10 scales, dual stainless liners, and ATS-34 blade-steel, with the strong "rolling-lock" to keep it from closing on your fingers.

Buy it...You won't be sorry.:).

flyingmonkey: Try doing a search on the Hobbit. I remember previous discussions on the legality of the knife. It is my understanding that it really is not double edged. The serrated edge is not sharpened, but are "bluntly" serrated for "grabbing" purposes, not cutting purposes.

Other than this issue, it is supposed to be a pretty tough knife. Certainly looks tough.

The Pocket Hobbit is a reliable and solidly made self defense folder.

The blade and the handle design are primarily intended for a reverse grip fighting style.

The handle shape combined with the G10 material guarantees a safe grip. The bulbous blade is ideal for slashing movements.
Unfortunately the thumb stud is impractical placed and need some practice.

I like the unique design of this folder.

I like a lot of things about this knife, as noted by others above. However, as Horus says, it is designed to be a dedicated reverse grip fighter so that's somewhat of a limitation. I also agree with his opinion about the thumbstud.

The only thing I can add is that I have seen several of these knives on which the serrations are not very evenly ground. Some have been too thick to grip well and others were so thin they were bending over. I asked REKAT about this problem on a knife I had and they said that the serrations are hand ground and just won't be as even as on a blade where the grinding is machine controlled. For this reason, I'd recommend inspecting before buying (or buy from a mail order dealer who will do it for you and give you a few days for approval).

as far as the legality issue, i discussed this knife w/a concealed handgun permit instructor in texas, and also a highway patrolman w/the tx DPS, and he said because of the 1" or so that is sharpened on the top of the blade (at least the sample we were looking at, the only one i have ever seen ) it was at least in a 'grey'area in texas, and he would arrest anyone he caught carrying the knife in the line of duty - sure, get a lwayer, spend 2K on fees, maybe win, but imho, in tx anyway, there are better knives w/out this liability imho, so why bother?? if not for this, i MIGHT would get one, i hate to get things i cant carry legally, i always want to, and thats not good lol

SIFU1A: I never realized that this knife had a 1" sharpened portion on the top of the blade. That would also make it very illegal in MA.

Calif. state knife laws allow concealment of any folders of any blade type and length. Folders must now have a detent. Fixed blades of any type and length cannot be concealed. Autos cannot be over 2" in blade length. Balisongs are grouped by LEO's with gravity knives as being illegal, though quite a few cases against Bali's have been thrown out after proving that they are not gravity knives. It ain't great here, but certainly ok for pocket Hobbits. Now if CCW permits were on a "shall issue" basis, I'd be much happier!

It is NOT sharpened. It is a false edge, like on some clip point blades. I couldn't cut butter (at least on my pocket hobbit)

honestly, have only seen one pocket hobbit, BUT it was supposed to be NIB, and the top edge on this one, while not REAL sharp, was not a false edge - i dont know, maybe not all of them are alike - BUT if they have the top edge sharpened like the one i saw that makes them double edge in this neck of the woods...i would wanna look before i bought - the 'serrations' also concerned the trooper, the ones on this knife, while not like a spydie serration, were fairly sharp and he said this was a liablity also - like i said imho better stuff around w/out the potential for probs anyway - i dont like to ask for trouble.......
