REKAT rolling lock/BM Axis lock.....

How do they compare?
The only Axis lock I own is the 940. I recently "discovered" REKAT, and have already ordered a Hobbit Fang, and preordered a Simonich-design Pikuni.
I've seen articles on the SIFU, but was never really interested because of the size.
The Carnivore, and particularly the Carnivore Cub do interest me, though.
Is the rolling lock as strong as the Axis is reported to be? Do the knives deploy as smoothly as an Axis?
Curious, because I may try a REKAT next time I get a "utility" folder for work.
Thanks.

The Rolling lock is every bit as strong as the Axis. Some would say stronger. It is not as smooth as the Axis but the newer REKAT's are smoother than the older ones.

I personally prefer the Axis lock, but that is personal preferance.

I have a 720 Pardue Axis and had a 730 Ares Axis as well as a Carnivour and a Sifu with Rolling Locks. I can't say that I have noticed any difference in smoothness in the knives that I have owned, they all were or are quite smooth. It is only a subjective opinion, but I FEEL that the Rolling Lock is stronger than the Axis Lock, perhaps because the REKAT knives are so much more sturdily made than the Benchmades appear to be. But they are quite a bit heavier, too.

I've owned both and IMHO, the Rolling Lock seems stronger and more robust, although it is not as smooth as the Axis lock (my Sifu REALLY smoothed out after some break-in). The fit and finish can be very spotty on both knives. I've had mixed experiences (broken springs, blades hitting spacers) with Axis locks and no problems, other than minor uneven grinds on my Sifu, so I'll give you my biased recommendation for the REKAT over the Axis. To me, REKAT is more willing to help the customer by sending out parts to fix their knives if they break (which is very important to me, YMMV). When an omega spring breaks on your Axis, you have to foot the shipping bill both ways to Oregon and wait for God knows how long for a part that should be user replaceable. Of course, I may just be an unlucky bastid (more than likely-ask Dexter Ewing) that shouldn't own knives with springs in them. Take my opinions and experiences for what their worth (not much) and hopefully you'll decide on the right knife for your needs.

As far as I know, there's no real evidence as to which is stronger. Unlike the other posters above, I don't even get a subjective impression of one being stronger than the other. There was a guy who posted some tests a few months back, both the axis and rolling lock did extremely well, as I recall.

Basically, both are very very strong. I strongly advise against making a buying decision based on someone telling you one "feels" stronger than the other, this is subjective, and you might handle knives with both locks and get the opposite impression. My recommendation: both locks are proven both strong and reliable, so make your buying decision based on other factors about the knives.

They are both so much better than the competition that they are in a virtual tie for way better than anything else, with the exception of integral frame locks like the Sebenza.

I like the Axis for simplicity and ambidexterity, and I like the Rolling lock for the side release.

Strength is a wash. You are far more likely to break the blade or your wrist before you break one of these locks.

The difference in lock strength between the two is so small that it shouldn't even be a factor.

In my opinion, the Carnivore combat ergonomics are a generation ahead of anything BM does today. The Sifu is probably the finest fighting folder made, period, end of discussion, at least if laws and carry ability allow you to pack something that big. And once both ship in the D2-M steel, they'll be *damned* hard to topple.

I don't know about lock strength, but there's nothing like a folder that walks and talks and snaps closed. Just like the OLD lockbacks and slip joints did.

PS. A REKAT doesn't.
