I have been hunting for a SIFU, but I think no longer(does that mean a fried brain?)due to reading this forum. SIFU1A had nothing good to say and the responces he got followed his lead. i.e; lock problems and poor customer service. What's a body to do? Does anyone know of a like knife? i,e; price, looks Politically Incorrect, finger groves and of GOOD quality?

I agree that REKAT has some serious QC issues. I had to put in a couple of hours of work to make my Carnie Cub acceptable. That still doesn't mean I trust the lock, really.

There's no production folder out there that's really similar. You could look at a Cold Steel Vaquero Grande or, for better quality, a Spyderco Civilian. But they're three different knives.

I have 2 Sifu (I have had 4 total), and have NEVER had a problem with ANY of them. Take the plunge.:).

I've got two sifu's a carnivour, carnivour cub and a hobbit fang. All are great knives and have had no more problems with them than any other production folder.

Hank:cool:

I have a problem with its clip screw. It come loose way too easily, that the only way to fix is to thread the liner.
I thought you too have the same problem, Dann? ;)

Rekat must be having problems because they are not responding on this board. People on the board keep posting up posts asking if Rekat is still in business. Great knife if you can find one with out QC problems. Don't tell me they don't have problems because I had to send my brand new sifu back to get the lock fixed.

I owned BF SIFU #007....Had no problems what so ever...Still trying to buy it back from the fellow I sold it to .Now the Pioneer II I bought I was not happy with ..I got lucky in the SIFU.

if ya want a big mega folder, they are the thing - ya just have to be sure your lock is working well (spine wack it, or something, i have had mine fold up on me, and others have too) and be prepared to send it in to bob to get it fixed if necc - customer service (once they get the knife, not counting responding to q's on the forum) is really great, 2 wk turn around for me - so while they are not 100%, i still like mine much better than a CS vaquero grande, etc, and have no plans to sell mine - but ya had better be prepared to send it in, if ya arent lucky for adjutment - take my word for it, having it fold up aint no fun at all, and painfull to boot.........and once they fold up on ya, it takes a while to get your confidence back, that big blade is dangerous to YOU if it does fail, but again, i have no plans to sell mine - even w/the negatives, its still one helluva knife.....

I have a SIFU in D2-E in my rightpocket..I wouldn't wanna be whitout it.
Especially the lockup on the black-T coated blades sucks, especially if you start spine whacking. But.. a bit of 600 grit sanding paper on a round file, and lockup among the tightest I've ever seen. If you use it a lot, you would get the same effect as when i sanded off the coating. In some cases you can also work on blade centering..

O.K., maybe REKAT has a QC problem, but The knives are well worth the work you put in them, very well even.

Or you can check the knife when you buy it in a store.

Santi,

No, I have NEVER had a problem with ANY of my REKATs (except for a couple that were "stiff" [the lock-release slider], but easily fixed by myself).

The one that you might be thinking of is a REKAT Carnivour that I got in a trade, where the previous owner (a machinist) drilled and tapped into the stainless liner to make it so that the clip would not ever "fall-off" due to stripped threads in the G-10 scale. It is really a shame that the clip-screws AREN'T screwed into the stainless liner on ALL their folders.

I made a rather negative posting against REKAT recently after seeing where a lock failed and cut someone's fingers. The idea of someone making knives with out checking out their SAFETY and DEPENDABILITY better than that really frustrated me. However, I like a big megafolder and love the REKAT SIFU. The last 2 days I have been thoroughly studing the rolling lock on all my REKAT SIFUS one at a time and so far they are functioning properly on my first 2 SIFUS. It seems to me that the 2 main ingredients to a properly functioning rolling lock is a good spring mechanism and a very close tolerance and tight fit where the rear of the blade matches up to the spring loaded locking mechanism. REKAT seems to me to have some excellent knives. It's a real shame to see a company with their potential for ex
cellent designed knives to develope a bad reputation for SAFETY and DEPENDABILITY just because they won't take the time to exercise good quality control over their finished products. ATTN: REKAT YOUR REPUTATION WILL MAKE YOU OR BREAK YOU !! THINK ABOUT IT !! It is not good advertisement that some of your finished prododts are cutting your customers fingers. NOT GOOD!!!

Actually I think the only other production folder with a blade in the 5" range is the SOG Pentagon Elite II or the Cold Steel Vaquero Grande, I'm not sure on the blade length of the Scimitar. Personally I have never really considered the SOG or Cold Steel offerings because I am not particularly into Zytel handles. I've actually never purchased one of the REKAT knives either, and have been vacilating on a SIFU much as you have been.

imho even w/the shortcomings, the SIFU is much better than the SOG PE2 or the CS vaquero grande - just much higher quality imho, just be ready to send it in for adjustment - and it does seem the black coating has something to do w/mine failing, when i shipped it in, a lot of the coating was ground off when i got it back, for whatever thats worth lol

Perhaps I have not tested them enough, but both of my SIFU's have been great. I especially like the D2 Enhanced. :D
