REKAT - what happened?

Welcome to Bladeforums! You might start with a look at the archived Round Eye Knife & Tool Forum

Thanks, and I apologize for what seems to be a lack of attention to the forum. I did search through there, but there is just too much to get the simple answer I was looking for - thus the "easy" way out. The archives tell of the REKAT closing their forum, but not what actually happened to the company.

Just asking...

Greg

The short answer is that they gave up making knives to concentrate on other aspects of their business.

Why is up for debate. Certainly, at the end, they were locked in constant arguments with customers here, and I guess they felt it was a losing proposition -- too little profit for too much aggravation.

They had problems with their signature technology, the Rolling Lock. Benchmade now uses it successfully.

Don't know about the Topic-Starter, but I took your advice.... Seems to be a good thing they aren't making knives anymore. The biggest beefs among customers seems to be that the locks failed too easily.

BTW, When did you get modded? It was either recently, or my nightshift job is really getting to me.

Congrats! Couldn't happen to a more deserving User.

most of the probs were with the sifu, most folks figured that the inertia from the long blade was just too hard on the lock, if ya ever see a schematic of how its made ya would probably think the same thing, its just not a very heavy (or really light lol) duty design imho, though it seemed to be "ok" with the smaller knives. with the tight tolerances it required it just didnt work well for mass production either, the crawford folder work well FWIW.

the guy who ran the forum on BF was a nut let me tell ya, to say the least he was in "denial" about all the probs lol.

aftyer having several of them i would say they are not very good knives, the sifu was most certainly way outclassed by the cammilus cuda maxx if ya want a large folder.

i still have a scar on my hand were my sifu bit me when the "lock of the 21st century" failed for the second time.

i wouldnt have one myself.

Sometimes it takes an advance in technology to make the locks work. Benchmade has a Red Class Rolling Lock made in China.

REKAT may simply have been unwilling to put the effort into making it work. They did have some nice designs and an enthusiastic customer base. Too bad they let all that go away.

is the BM version made pretty close to the REKAT version??

it just doesnt seem like a good design to me, too easy for some funk to get in there and gum up the thing, they would not be a good choice in a dirty sandy environment i don think.

i was suprised it worked as well as it did after looking at the schematic of it.

i used to have that and lost it in a PC crash.

i have 3 carnivores, a cub & a sifu, never had problems with the locks, i like the handles, design, blade style, i'd like to see benchmade make one using their machinery,or even with the axis lock, that would be real real nice......

Actually I wasn't moderated - if that was what you're asking...

If this was a "jab", you'll need to be more specific. I didn't actually join BF until 2005. The REKAT thread involving something I wrote to usenet rec.knives was cross-posted without my permission or knowledge.

If that was what you are referring to.

Sorry if there was some confusion. Not a jab.

The latter half of my post was directed at Esav Benyamin. Not at you.

No problem. I'm not familiar with the culture on this board, otherwise I suspect I may have known to whom you were referring.

I don't know how close they are.
Here's the Benchmade lock mechanism page:
http://www.benchmade.com/about_knives/locking_mechanisms.asp

they look different than the old rekat design, in the rekat design a VERY thin diameter pin engages into a notch on the rear of the blade to lock it, and since the pin is so thin it bends easily(& fails), and funk can get in the notch and prevent locking, and if the pin gets battered some from inertia opening or the notch gets rounded out some it fails too. also like i said the tolerances are tight, i have had 3 sifus and all had lock problems FWIW, all went back to rekat (one went back twice) and i NEVER inertia opened 2 of them and only rarely inertia opened the 3rd, one of them would not lock up right even when LNIB, i sent it back and edc'd it for a few weeks and it failed again, of course they fixed it but i dont know that anyone works on rekat locks now so if ya have one i would really treat it carefully 'cuz if it breaks ya are gonna have problems getting it fixed, if ya even can, also keep it spotless clean and never inertia open them that is VERY hard on 'em. imho even normal opening/closing is hard on them due to the close tolerances req'd for the lock to lock right,

once i got them all locking up right i got rid of all of them ASAP before they broke again, my fondest memory of them is i swapped one for a bud nealy pesh kebz 5" M2 steel soon after rekat went under and have certainly never missed any of them, i liked big folders then and got a cammilus maxx which was 2X the knife, to compare the 2 (sifu and maxx) i have had 4 cammilus maxx's and have never had any probs with any of them.

Well, my issues with the Pocket Hobbit were apparently well documented on this forum in 1999, though I didn't learn that it had been cross-posted until 2005;
