Hi all, happy new year. I have a problem. In the course of paring down and condensing my collection a good bit, I wound up with a Spyderco Southard, and that damn knife is making it really hard for me to put anything else in my pocket. I'm looking for a knife that can compete with it for space in my pocket. I like blades 3-3.5 inches long, great fit/finish/quality, and that are fun to flick open, either with a flipper, nice thumb studs, thumb hole, whatever. I have about $200 to throw around, but I can stretch a bit of need be. Your thoughts? So far, all I've come up with is "another Southard."

I've owned the domino, but it didn't really do anything for me. I owned the zt0200, but I got frustrated with the recurve. Same with the 0350. The 801 or 560 intrigue me, especially since the ZT knives I've owned have been awesomely made, I'm just not a recurve guy. Not to derail the thread, but between the 560 or the 801, is there consensus on what's generally preferred?

While I don't own an 0560 (I have handled one several times though), I much prefer the 0801. they're both solid but the 0801 just feels like your could do anything, the 0560 is just too light for it's size IMO. whichever you choose, you will be happy, the 0560 still is an excellent knife. :)

I've owned all the knives mentioned above. However, if you're looking for an EDC that's a step up in coolness & quality I would suggest a Microtech Mini Matrix. Fun to flip all day and at just over 3" it's an awesome mid-sized knife, and not in everyone's pocket (southard/560).

I found mine here on Bladeforums, for just over 200. I believe they also do their stonewash or beadblast on this model. Happy hunting!

If you like the Microtech, it is just a copy of the ZT777, which was a limited run, but the 770 is pretty much the same design but less expensive and there is also a carbon fiber version.

I'll second this. I like my mini matrix better than my Southard. I also like it better than my ZT 770 ;)

If you consider Microtechs, look into the Socom Elite or Delta. No flipper on these models, but they do ride on ceramic ball bearings. This makes the deployment like greased lightning, after the requisite break in.
