Hey guys,

Please forgive my ignorance, but is there a relationship between Swamp Rat and Busse knives? Some of the models look very similar. If so, do they both use INFI steel?

In ultra-basic terms:

Busse - INFI
Swamp Rat - SR 101
Scrap Yard - SR 77

Jerry Busse is Busse Combat Knives
Jennifer Busse (Jerry's Wife) is Swamp Rat Knives
Dan Busse (Jerry's Brother) is Scrap Yard Knives

All three companies also share production facilities -- the type of steel, blade thickness, heat treatments, and handles differ, but many of the BC/SR/SY models do share the same basic blade designs. However, they all zealously protect their brand identities, so you should not contact any of the companies about the knives manufactured by any of the other companies.

Most people focus on the steel but I think the really impressive thing about the Busse kin
(When I asked Dan what to call all the companies together the answer was Busse Kin)
knives is the heat treat. Scrapyard got S7 shock steel hard enough to hold an excellent edge while Swamprat got an incredible amount of toughness out of SR101 aka 52100
by using a diff tempering process. I believe they are the only production company to do so.
52100 is very hard to work with even without the diff tempering as Spyderco found out with their Mule. They have since changed the steel in the upcoming bushcraft blade to O1 and Spyderco are no slouches themselves.

INFI is the benchmark to which all other steel is measured.
