Picked up a ZT0550 this week (yes I'm late to the party;) ) and it got me wondering why so little knives these days use S35VN when I believe it was originally labeled as a successor or at least improvement upon S30V? Dos anyone have an idea or explanation for that?

it's more than you think. CRK, Hinderer, Strider, some Spydercos, Bradley, Protech, Spartan Blades,Microtech just to name a few.

S35vn isn't really that much of an improvement over s30v, they say it is a little tougher. The biggest advantage is on finishing. It polishes much easier than s30v so you see a lot of high end customs and productions using it.

There's very little advantage in using it over s30v in full production. You're better off with elmax if you want tougher s30v.

I'd call the easier machining a pretty big advantage. It means less wear and tear on bits, belts, and other equipment which translates into savings for the manufacturer at some point. I like S35VN, I've used it in ZT, Spyderco, CRK, and Hinderer knives and it works just fine. I cannot tell any significant performance differences aside from S35VN being slightly ever so easier to sharpen on basic equipment.
